“Who’s the Boss?” 10 ways to start taking control (time management, goal setting, record tracking)

At first glance, it would seem that positive thinking and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) have nothing to do with one another. But many of us with ADD develop negative thinking patterns because we become frustrated by our challenges and frequent feelings of being overwhelmed. This negative outlook then makes it even harder for us to manage those challenges and move forward.

Practicing positive thinking allows people with ADD to focus on our strengths and accomplishments, which increases happiness and motivation. This, in turn, allows us to spend more time making progress, and less time feeling down and stuck. The following tips provide practical suggestions that you can use to help you shift into more positive thinking patterns:

1. Take Good Care of Yourself
It’s much easier to be positive when you are eating well, exercising, and getting enough rest.

2. Remind Yourself of the Things You Are Grateful For
Stresses and challenges don’t seem quite as bad when you are constantly reminding yourself of the things that are right in life. Taking just 60 seconds a day to stop and appreciate the good things will make a huge difference.

3. Look for the Proof Instead of Making Assumptions
A fear of not being liked or accepted sometimes leads us to assume that we know what others are thinking, but our fears are usually not reality. If you have a fear that a friend or family member’s bad mood is due to something you did, or that your co-workers are secretly gossiping about you when you turn your back, speak up and ask them. Don’t waste time worrying that you did something wrong unless you have proof that there is something to worry about.

4. Refrain from Using Absolutes
Have you ever told a partner “You’re ALWAYS late!” or complained to a friend “You NEVER call me!”? Thinking and speaking in absolutes like ‘always’ and ‘never’ makes the situation seem worse than it is, and programs your brain into believing that certain people are incapable of delivering.

5. Detach From Negative Thoughts
Your thoughts can’t hold any power over you if you don’t judge them. If you notice yourself having a negative thought, detach from it, witness it, and don’t follow it.

6. Squash the “ANTs”
In his book “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life,” Dr. Daniel Amen talks about “ANTs” – Automatic Negative Thoughts. These are the bad thoughts that are usually reactionary, like “Those people are laughing, they must be talking about me,” or “The boss wants to see me? It must be bad!” When you notice these thoughts, realize that they are nothing more than ANTs and squash them!

7. Practice Lovin’, Touchin’ & Squeezin’ (Your Friends and Family)
You don’t have to be an expert to know the benefits of a good hug. Positive physical contact with friends, loved ones, and even pets, is an instant pick-me-up. One research study on this subject had a waitress touch some of her customers on the arm as she handed them their checks. She received higher tips from these customers than from the ones she didn’t touch!

8. Increase Your Social Activity
By increasing social activity, you decrease loneliness. Surround yourself with healthy, happy people, and their positive energy will affect you in a positive way!

9. Volunteer for an Organization, or Help another Person
Everyone feels good after helping. You can volunteer your time, your money, or your resources. The more positive energy you put out into the world, the more you will receive in return.

10. Use Pattern Interrupts to Combat Rumination
If you find yourself ruminating, a great way to stop it is to interrupt the pattern and force yourself to do something completely different. Rumination is like hyper-focus on something negative. It’s never productive, because it’s not rational or solution-oriented, it’s just excessive worry. Try changing your physical environment – go for a walk or sit outside. You could also call a friend, pick up a book, or turn on some music.

When it comes to the corporate world, protocol is pretty much the religion. To know the things needed to do are the basics of productivity, but interaction and having a steady mind makes up the entire thing to true productivity. There are those who seem to work well even under pressure, but they’re uncommon ones and we are human and imperfect. To get these little things like stress under our skins won’t solve our problems. Sometimes it takes a bit of courage to admit that we’re turning to be workaholics than tell ourselves that we’re not doing our best.

Understanding Binge-Eating and Its Treatment

Binge-eating involves more than simply overeating. Binge-eating is an eating-related disorder, associated with inappropriate eating habits and challenging emotions. This article outlines what binge-eating is and how it can be successfully treated.

Binge-Eating Defined

Binge-eating is a medical and psychological condition during which a person eats large amounts of food over short periods of time. Regardless of the signals their bodies send that they’re full, those who binge continue to eat amounts of food that surpass normal portions.

Binge-eating involves more than just eating a double portion of a favorite food. Those who binge might eat 2 cheeseburgers followed by a half gallon of ice cream and a box of cookies.

Typical Thinking Patterns

One who binge-eats engages in unhealthy thinking patterns, which drive her to over-eat. She might feel powerless to arrest her aggressive eating behaviors. Even though you might believe a person would feel too ashamed to binge-eat, the fact is that shame can actually emotionally fuel a binge-eating episode.

Experiencing uncomfortable feelings such as self-loathing and shame is a hallmark symptom of someone who’s dealing with binge-eating. Many people who struggle with binging also have distorted body images. They might believe they’re obese when actually they’re within normal weight standards or only mildly overweight.

On the other hand, a person who binge-eats could also weigh considerably more than the weight charts recommend for her height and age.

Although the condition does occur in males, it occurs more often in females. Recognize that people who binge can discover optimism and confidence to live successful lives in recovery.

Treatments for Binge-Eating

If you battle binge-eating, there are a wide range of effective treatment regimens to help you rise above the condition.

Here are some beneficial treatment avenues:

1. Self-help groups. Depending on the community, you might have the opportunity to attend self-help groups to help reduce or stop incidents of binge-eating. Self-help groups such as Overeaters Anonymous can provide wonderful, understanding emotional support for people who struggle with binge-eating.

2. Individual cognitive therapy. For those who require more professional aid, attending individual therapy sessions can be quite helpful. Cognitive therapy is conducted by a trained therapist who works to confront the individual’s distorted body image, unhealthy thinking patterns, and feelings of shame.

• The therapist aids the person in replacing troublesome thoughts with more realistic, healthy, and positive thoughts. Encouraging the person who binge-eats to surround herself with understanding, supportive family and friends is another way a therapist motivates someone in recovery from this very real medical condition.

3. Family therapy. If the person who’s dealing with binging is a teen, family therapy in addition to individual therapy can be a life-saver to aid family members in better understanding what their teen is going through.

• Plus, difficult family relationships can be confronted and addressed so that everyone in the family learns to relate in healthier ways overall which can serve to reduce binging behavior.

4. Intensive day treatment. In the event you require more intensive treatment than individual therapy, family therapy, and self-help group attendance, intensive day treatment may be an option.

• These programs provide 2 to 6 hours of professional treatment for binge-eating 3 or more days a week. Such treatment typically takes place at eating disorders facilities that provide a cornucopia of treatment options that enable individuals on their paths to recovery.

5. Inpatient treatment stay. Sometimes, the person struggling with binge-eating would benefit from voluntarily entering an inpatient treatment facility for a 4-6 week stay. This milieu therapy provides a 100% supportive physical and emotional environment around the clock to ensure binge-eating behaviors subside and healthy eating habits increase.

• Outpatient follow-up treatment to provide much-needed support will be necessary as you transition back into your home environment.

Binge-eating is a medical/psychological condition that involves eating large amounts of food and experiencing emotional turmoil. People can and do overcome the challenging behaviors and feelings associated with binge-eating to embrace healthy, fulfilling lives.

The key to recovery is recognition of the condition and acquiring effective treatment while gaining caring support of friends and family members to live a well-deserved, rewarding life.

Create More Flexibility at Work through Job Sharing

Job sharing offers a lot of benefits for both employers and employees. These flexible arrangements can improve the quality of life for workers and make it easier for the organizations they work for to access the talent they need. These are the major advantages of job sharing along with techniques for making it work.

Advantages of Job Sharing

1. Enjoy more leisure time. For many people, the typical work week extends far beyond the traditional 40 hours. Job sharing is one way to preserve leisure time for activities you find meaningful.

2. Fulfill family obligations. If you’re a caregiver sandwiched between raising children and looking after elderly parents, you’re dealing with a lot of responsibilities outside the workplace. Flexible arrangements can make it easier to care for your loved ones.

3. Protect your health. Maybe aging or medical conditions make it difficult for you to work full time. Part time hours could be just what you need to stay in the workforce without overtaxing yourself.

4. Provide better service to clients. Your clients will probably like knowing that they get full coverage because you and your job sharing partner back each other up during the hours each of you are away from the office. Job sharing can also reduce turnover so clients get to work with trusted employees in more stable relationships.

Techniques For Making Job Sharing Work

1. Choose the right partner. To pull it off, you need to select a partner who is compatible and competent. Look for someone who complements your skills and is committed to sharing accountability and information.

2. Structure your arrangement. Most people decide to share the entire position while others divide up responsibility for different tasks. Plan out your initial schedule including how you’ll handle your time out of the office. You may want to remain available for emergency calls.

3. Put everything in writing. If your boss is receptive, present them with a written proposal. It will help you to think out all the details and demonstrate your professionalism.

4. Coordinate with your partner. If you doubt that demanding jobs can be shared, just think of hospital nurses who share patients on different shifts. The key is to communicate all necessary information and maintain accountability.

5. Reassure your supervisor. It’s natural for your boss to feel hesitant about any changes that could disrupt the workplace. Put those concerns to rest by delivering superior results and showing that a team can do the job better than one individual alone.

6. Be responsive to the needs of co-workers and clients. Similarly, the people you work with may find the process confusing at first. Be proactive about providing contact information and your schedule. Let your actions show that you’re fully committed even if you work part time hours.

7. Organize your workspace. If you’ll be sharing an office and desk, keep important documents, files, and supplies in logical order so it’s easy for the other person to find. You may even want to share the same voice mail and email.

8. Plan ahead for changes in your arrangement. Decide what you’ll do in case you or your partner drops out or management wants to terminate the arrangement. You may decide that you’ll work full time until you can find a new partner or accept reassignment to another position.

A Parent’s Guide to Gardening With Kids

Gardening with your children is a fun and productive way to spend time together, reconnect with nature and get some exercise. Here are some techniques that will help everyone enjoy the experience.

Benefits of Gardening With Kids

1. Improve your family’s eating habits. Your kids will be more excited about eating fruits and vegetables that they’ve grown themselves. The anticipation of harvesting will make them want to try new foods.

2. Become more environmentally conscious. TV and the internet keep kids indoors much of the time. Working in the dirt with plants and insects is a valuable reminder about our dependence upon the natural world.

3. Reinforce a sense of gratitude. It’s easy to forget all the effort that goes into producing the food we eat if we just order it online or pick it up at the store. Even a small venture into agriculture can increase our appreciation for the hard work involved.

4. Get more physically active. Sedentary lifestyles put kids at risk for becoming overweight. Planting and weeding are great ways to integrate more activity into daily routines.

Gardening With Younger Children

1. Let kids assume ownership. Small children will need guidance and instruction but let them take a leadership role. They can help select the plants they want to grow and the tasks they like the best.

• Provide lots of praise and positive feedback as they gradually assume more responsibility over time.

2. Keep it simple. Break tasks down into individual steps that your child can understand. Encourage them to select plants that will be easy to grow. Most beans thrive with little care. Plus, they’re nutritional powerhouses and the big seeds make them a cinch for kids to handle.

3. Provide instant gratification. Fast results will keep kids motivated. Radishes are usually ready to pick in less than three weeks. Mix in some smaller lettuce plants with the larger ones and you’ll have tender salad greens in about the same time.

4. Make it educational. Use your garden to teach everything from science to poetry. You can talk about how weather affects plants and recite poems about flowers.

5. Play it safe. Children are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, so in urban areas you may need to get your soil tested. Make it a rule that they need to ask an adult for approval before they eat any plant. Avoid dangerous chemicals and be careful with sharp tools.

6. Have fun. Encourage your kids to invite friends over to help. Unusual varieties of plants can be amusing, so shop around for fun seeds to get a crop of foot long carrots, miniature pumpkins, or purple tomatoes.

Gardening with Tweens and Teens

1. Let older kids guide younger ones. Middle school and high school students can be great role models and instructors for small children. The interaction is inspiring and gratifying for both sides.

2. Challenge veteran gardeners to set new goals. Horticulture will become a way of life for many kids who have the benefit of early exposure. Keep it stimulating by supporting them in developing new skills.

3. Go gently with new gardeners. If your teen is new to gardening, they may feel tentative about doing anything that would make them seem different from their peers. Until there’s a reality show or video game to make growing plants officially cool, tread carefully.

• You might want to start with herb gardens. They’re easy and practical and can even be kept indoors.
