How to Create Your Own Affirmations

Affirmations are powerful tools you can use to help you live the life you’ve always dreamed of.

What are affirmations?

Well, they’re positive statements that you say out loud on a regular basis.

The goal is to re-program your subconscious mind so you can remove any negative thoughts that prevent you from living your dreams.

Affirmations work by overwriting negative thoughts, which are stored in your subconscious, with positive ones.

The Benefits of Affirmations

We all have mental recordings repeating again and again in our mind. Most of them come from childhood and have been directing our actions for years.

Unfortunately, many of these old recordings are constantly feeding our mind negative information.

These negative recordings don’t always come from direct statements from people, but they tend to be general theories we’ve come to believe about our situation or ourselves.

If our parents always cautioned us about strangers, for example, we may have the mindset that sees the world as a dangerous place.

If we came from a family without much money, we may have limiting beliefs about our finances that prevent us from attaining or keeping wealth.

The good news is you can override these destructive messages using the power of affirmations!

Affirmations can reinforce good behaviors and change ones that need changing.

To make those changes, you need to create affirmations you can identify with so they can help you improve.

Keep these key points in mind to create effective affirmations:

An affirmation must be in the present tense. Your subconscious doesn’t have the ability to accept a promise of future behavior.

“I will eat healthy foods” doesn’t give your subconscious a timeline or deadline to perform your promise to yourself.

Instead, state your affirmation as though it’s a behavior you already exhibit.

“I always make healthy food choices” is a present tense statement your subconscious can accept as a fact.

For affirmations to work properly, they must be stated in the first person.

In other words, don’t create an affirmation saying, “You must eat healthy foods.”

In order for your affirmation to matter to your subconscious, it must be personal and use the word “I.”

“I will choose healthy foods every time I eat” is a personal statement your subconscious can apply to your own behavior.

Finally, an affirmation must be stated in a positive manner.

“I must stop eating junk food” sends your mind a distorted message; it interprets the same as “I eat junk food.”

This type of statement will lead you in the opposite direction of your goal!

Instead, “I choose fresh, healthy snacks when I am hungry” is a positive statement telling your mind the exact desired behavior.

How To Use Affirmations

Begin using affirmations by choosing a few short, clear statements about the things you’d like to see happen in your life.

Try some of these:

I enjoy exercising every day.
I love eating nutritious fresh foods in healthy portions.
When I am free from the desire to smoke, I breathe clean, fresh air.
I have everything I need to be content and happy today.

You can write your affirmations on note cards and keep them with you in your purse or wallet.

Whenever you have a few moments to spare, take them out and read them aloud.

State the affirmations in a clear, firm voice with a smile on your face as you say them.

This will help you become more aware of the positive vibrations of the affirmations, allowing them easier access to your subconscious mind.

Using affirmations on a daily basis is a terrific way to boost the positives in your life.

I surround myself with positive people and positive thoughts at all times.

I surround myself with positive people because I know that my friends and colleagues affect my thoughts; my thoughts direct my actions; and my actions determine the outcome of my life.

I realize that I am bound to rub elbows with some negative people in the course of my work or my interactions within the community.

However, when I choose people as partners, employees or friends, I make a point of choosing people who lift me up and encourage me to see the possibilities in life.

We all have challenges in life.

Some of us have more than others, but none of us is immune to having logs fall across our path.

Anyone can stand around and cluck at the log, and lots of people are more than willing to stand there and offer sympathy.

But the people I call my friends are the ones who go for the chainsaw and help me clear the road.

My best friends are those who go a step further and use the wood to build a house or a bridge.

They see the opportunity in every challenge and find a way to draw that out!

Because I am much more than a victim of circumstances, I surround myself with people who feel the same way and help me make the most of whatever life sends my way.

I communicate positively and peacefully.

I exchange words and feelings with others in a positive and calm manner.

When I communicate with others, I first make sure that I am in a positive frame of mind.

I do my best to be aware of the things I wish to convey to them.

I remove myself from feelings of anger and frustration before I engage in communications.

Preparing myself in this way allows me to remain calm and communicate constructively.

It is difficult to communicate with others when they feel defensive.

I am able to lower their defenses and provide a peaceful stage for constructive communication.

This opens the door for others to communicate in a positive way as well.

My constructive way of communicating makes me feel empowered.

I feel centered, strong, and in control. I know I am fair in my dealings with others.

Today I choose to communicate in a calm, constructive way that offers a peaceful environment.

I remain positive no matter what happens and feel confident in the fact that I can walk away with my head held high if I need to.

I feel good about my ability to remain positive and peaceful in my communications.

Why I Use Positive Affirmations Every Day

Thinking positive thoughts every day will allow you to live a more positive life.

It’s easy to be overcome by negative thoughts and experiences, and it’s important to create a positive dialogue with yourself to get you through those tough times.

Some people call these thoughts positive self talk, and this form of inner dialogue can allow you to reach new heights as a person, overcoming all that stands in your way.

Understanding Positive Self Talk

Positive self-talk is the practice of responding to those negative thoughts that creep into your mind throughout the day.

You know the thoughts: the ones that have you thinking, “you can’t” instead of “you can,” or “it’s too hard” instead of “you can do it.”

When you replace such negativity with positive thoughts, you can bring about astounding changes in your life and the way you feel about yourself.

For instance, when you’re starting a new job, and your mind says, “There’s no way I’m going to fit in here. I don’t deserve this job” you can stop this dialogue in its tracks.

Instead of letting your mind go on and on, envisioning one disaster after another right up to the moment you’re fired, you can respond with positive thoughts.

These positive thoughts can also be called positive affirmations.

Positive Affirmations and You

It can take a lot of practice to make the change to positive self-talk when you’ve always experienced negative self-talk.

Perhaps you can’t even remember a time when this negative dialogue wasn’t playing in the background of your life.

You may need to put some effort into responding to the negativity with positive thoughts, but by using positive affirmations, the effort required is an easy task.

Positive affirmations allow you to replace your negativity, one thought at a time!

Many people seek out lists of free positive affirmations to help them come up with positive responses.

You can find some of these lists on self-help websites or in bookstores and libraries.

At first, you may wonder if it can be this easy to change your life with affirmations.

Consider this fact: haven’t all those negative thoughts running through your mind forged the path that you’ve followed throughout your life and gotten you where you are today?

Answer this question truthfully and you’ll see the need for positive thought!

If negative thoughts got you where you are now, can you imagine where you could be if the negativity was replaced by confident, positive thoughts?

Handling Difficult Conversations with Positive Statements

No matter how hard we may try, there’s just no way to avoid some difficult conversations.

However, there are positive things you can say and do to help you handle them better.

Your first response may be to change the subject when faced with a difficult discussion.

This won’t solve the problem or heal the hurt that caused the situation in the first place.

It’s better to take a deep breath, gather your thoughts, and face the difficulty now rather than later.

Remember it’s not your job to fix the situation unless you were directly involved.

People sometimes just need a friend to listen when they’re going through tough circumstances.

They really don’t want you to fix things for them.

Being available to listen is sometimes the best way to show your friend that you care.

If the situation requires you to talk with someone going through difficulties, try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes.

What would you want a friend to say to you if you were in that situation? In all likelihood, they would like to hear the same thing.

Here are some positive ways to handle difficult conversations:

1. Try to help them identify the problem they’re facing.

Maybe they’re upset over something that’s not related to the perceived problem.

Listen to your friend as they talk, trying to ask questions to help them determine the real problem.

2. Avoid acting like you know what will happen next.

If your friend’s going through a difficult time in a relationship, don’t tell them everything will work out.

Instead, tell them “I’m available to you whenever you want to talk.”

3. Ask general questions rather than expecting them to answer questions they may not be ready to answer. “How’s it going?” is a better question than asking them if they’ve moved out of their home after a breakup.

Let them bring up additional topics when they feel comfortable doing so.

4. Refrain from judging others.

Rather than saying you’ve never trusted a particular company when your friend has just lost a large sum of money, you might want to ask, “Is there anything I can do to help?”

Most likely they’ll tell you no, but will appreciate your asking.

5. Your similar situation isn’t the same as theirs.

While it may be true that you’ve lost a job or a pet, it’s not the same thing as losing a loved one.

Try to encourage your friend to think about the good times rather than their loss.

6. Acknowledge your friend’s feelings.

“I understand that you were hurt by what they said. I would be hurt, too” is better than telling your friend, “There’s no reason to be upset about that.”

Acknowledge and validate their feelings, and they’ll feel better.

7. Think about what your friend needs most.

It may be to have someone tell them “I love you.” Try to be alert to your friend’s unspoken needs.

Be reassuring when possible regardless if your friend has spoken a need or not.

8. Let others know you understand their point of view.

Telling someone, “This sounds important to you” doesn’t mean you’ll go along with what they want, but at least you acknowledge what they believe to be the best solution.

9. Stay focused on the problem and don’t get dragged into a fight.

If they verbally attack, don’t take the bait. “I see you’re upset, and I’m sorry.

Maybe we should take a few minutes for each of us to calm down.”

It’s important to remember that no matter what the difficult situation happens to be, it’s better to listen more than talk.

You can find many lists of affirmations in bookstores or on self-help websites. Or you can make up your own!

The key is to create affirmations that are focused on the positive and written in the present tense.

Affirmations are about the present, not the past or future.

It’s also important to use statements that most clearly describe the way you would like to think or feel in any given situation.

Words have power because they evoke emotions, so choose affirmations that evoke the necessary emotions for you to achieve your goals.
