How to Be a Better Communicator

Communication is the key when it comes to anything that involves collaboration.

Since humans are a social species, communication is involved in nearly everything you do.

Some people are born with the natural ability to communicate well, while others may struggle with it.

No matter what category you fall into, it’s likely that you can benefit from paying attention to improving your communication skills.

Why Better Communication Helps You

Did you know that most businesses consider your communication skills to be the most important characteristic about you?

This means that you could have top-notch knowledge and job skills but still fail to land a job if you’re lacking in the communication department.

Communication is certainly not only important when it comes to your work life, but it’s also vital in having a successful home life as well.

Couples and family members that are good communicators lead happier lives overall.

Proper communication will prevent misunderstandings and save you time so you won’t have to go back and explain yourself again and again.

You know you’ve gained good communication skills when you can communicate your thoughts effectively with as few words as necessary!

How To Improve Communication With Others

Communication is a two way street.

This means that you could have excellent skills, but if the recipient is lacking, then you may not be understood.

This is why it’s important not only to develop our speaking skills, but our listening skills, too.

Since you can’t affect the skill level of others, the only thing you can do is strengthen your own communication skills.

Besides, when you’re an excellent communicator, more people will understand you, everything around you will run more efficiently, and you’ll more often get what you want!

Try these strategies to improve your communication skills:

1. Avoid arguing. If you run into a snag in a conversation and it starts to morph into an argument, step back and realize what’s going on.

It’s easy to get swept up into the blame game, but ultimately it’s not important who’s at fault.

What’s important is the mutual understanding of the issue at hand and a desire for a solution that benefits everyone.

2. Don’t be afraid to compromise. You may be tempted to try and “win” but that’s not the best way to reach a mutual agreement.

You may be happier with getting your way, but it may come at the expense of the other person, which can cause further issues.

Find a good compromise that you both can willingly accept.

3. Work on listening. Your listening skills are even more important than your speaking skills.

After all, how will you know what you should say – and when – if you haven’t effectively listened?

Listen more than you speak and you’ll gain a profound wisdom of others, too!

4. Keep your focus. Communication will get overly complicated if you worry about too many issues at once.

Avoid bringing up the past or other issues and, instead, focus on the one topic at hand.

5. Stay calm and take responsibility. Adopt a calm and cool manner of handling situations.

When things remain low key, it’s easier to communicate and get your point across.

This also means that you need to take responsibility for what you say.

Don’t be afraid to admit mistakes when you’re wrong.

Becoming a better communicator doesn’t happen overnight.

But if you keep practicing and tweaking your skills, you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish.

How to Develop Satisfaction in Your Work

Even if you’ve landed your dream job, it’s possible to fall into a pattern where you find your work far from enjoyable.

When you’re dissatisfied with your work, it can be a huge chore to get up in the morning and you may even feel hopeless.

However, the good news is that you can change certain aspects of how you approach your work in order to find satisfaction in the job you’ve already got.

Follow these tips to increase your satisfaction at work:

1. Keep open dialogues. It’s truly important to keep open dialogues with your colleagues and superiors.

Voice your concerns calmly, without sounding blunt and unappreciative.

If no one knows that you’re dissatisfied, nothing will ever be done to fix the problem!

2. Reward yourself. You can increase your own personal satisfaction by deciding on certain rewards that you can give yourself once you’ve completed a task successfully.

For example, if you’ve worked hard all week, allow yourself a fun Friday night.

Don’t wait for anyone else to reward you!

3. Handling stress. Start looking at how you handle stress.

Unfortunately, there’s a certain amount of stress associated with every career.

Are you actively searching for ways to vent your stress or are you keeping it bottled up inside?

Make sure you have proper releases for work stress as well as home stress.

4. Avoid getting stuck in a rut. It’s difficult when you feel like you aren’t making steps in the right direction.

You might feel like everyday is the same and that you aren’t getting to explore your full potential.

Think about what your goals are at your current job and ask yourself what actions you’re taking in order to get there.

Reformulate your action plan if necessary, and then take steps to move you forward again toward your goals.

5. Think positive thoughts. Your life is what you make of it.

When you adopt a positive mindset, things will more often go your way.

When you think negatively, of course your job will continue to be unsatisfying!

Remain optimistic and you’ll find the drive needed to keep working toward positive goals.

6. Make a change. If you find that you’re truly in the wrong line of work, it’s time to plan out a change for the better.

As a last resort, if you truly feel that there’s nothing you can do to improve your current situation, then make an attainable plan for change.

You may want the same position at another company, or an entire career change all together, whatever it is, find out what you need to do, and then do it!

Right Mindset And Action

In the end, as long as you strive for a positive mindset and take action toward your goals, good things will happen for you.

When people are stuck, they tend to freeze and feel helpless.

If this happens, it can turn into a vicious cycle that you might believe is unbreakable. But it isn’t!

Take charge of your thoughts to break the negativity and take small steps each day toward a better life.

Making a change overnight is overwhelming, but when you take small steps, change happens easily.

Before you know it, you’ll be at least a little more satisfied and fulfilled at work.

Developing an Intense Focus

We all have a tendency to become side tracked.

We may want to complete an important task, yet many distractions poke and prod us away from our goals.

How can we keep our focus on the task as hand?

Distractions may be hard to ignore, especially when it’s a chatty coworker, a ringing phone, a demanding spouse, or many other things.

Thankfully, there are some tried and true strategies we can use to put the distractions on hold and place an intense focus on our task.

Try these techniques to develop an intense focus:

1. Remove distractions. You can’t focus if you’re constantly checking your email, Facebook, or other time-stealers!

You’ll get more done if you allow your mind to get in the groove with some peace and quiet.

Turn off your email, close your web browsers, shut off your phone off or forward it to voicemail, and put on headphones to avoid loud noises.

You’ll be glad you did!

2. Remain committed. You know that you have something you should finish, but are you one hundred percent committed to seeing it through to completion?

This is where you need to be honest with yourself.

If you’re not fully committed to your task, you’re more likely to allow distractions to overtake your mind.

More often than not, you’ll use distractions to create excuses and exceptions that try to justify your lack of focus.

If you are committed, it will be easier to ignore distractions and keep your focus.

This is something only you can decide.

3. Set a time limit. Even if the task itself doesn’t have a time limit, assign one anyway.

If you have a deadline, you’ll be more apt to complete your task in a timely manner.

Rather than giving in to the surrounding distractions, you’ll be competing against the clock to get things done on time.

4. Take frequent breaks. This may sound contradictory, but it actually makes a world of difference for the workaholic.

If we work too long at one time, not only do we become physically tired, but our minds tire as well.

This makes us more susceptible to distractions and shatters our concentration.

Work intently for an hour and then allow yourself a 10-minute break.

When you return from the break, you’ll be more focused, your mind will be clearer, and you’ll be more likely to work for another hour without losing focus.

This strategy allows you to get more work done in a shorter time.

5. Use a list. Lists are wonderful tools that help you accomplish your work quicker and easier.

Before beginning, write down everything you need to accomplish and then cross out each task as you complete it.

The process of crossing things off your list is a great motivator to keep you working without distractions, plus it helps to build the momentum to get everything done.

6. Reward yourself for a job well done. When you’re able to stay focused on an important task, reward yourself!

Just keep thinking about the big picture and your reward once you’re finished with the task at hand.

This will keep you on target and you’ll finish as quickly as you possibly can.

Everyone loves a treat for a job well done!

6. Remember, you’re human, too. Losing your focus is easy in an existence that’s filled with daily distractions and annoyances.

However, you’ll find that you can keep an intense focus on something if you practice these techniques.

Make them a habit and enjoy your rewards!

Discover the Secret Meaning Behind Body Language

Do you know what people are truly saying with their body?

One way to decipher their code is to learn the secret meaning of body language.

Whether you’re questioning if you got the job after an interview or if that first date went well, body language can provide you with a secret edge.

Be careful, though, because body language can be easily misconstrued.

Sometimes people have certain actions or posture habits that disguise what they’re really saying.

But by remaining alert and observant you’ll fair better than most!

Here are a few things to keep an eye out for that’ll give you the upper hand:

1. Be aware of how they’re speaking.

Positive ways of communication include speaking at the same tone and the same rate of speech that you’re using.

It’s also a positive sign when someone can share a laugh with you and truly have a sincere and inviting sound to their voice.

On the flipside, negative ways of speaking include speaking a lot louder, softer, faster, or slower than you.

If their voice sounds unsteady or quivering, they might not mean exactly what they’re saying to you aloud.

2. Notice what they’re wearing.

People who are truly interested do their best to make a long lasting and positive impression.

Their clothing will usually be neat and tidy and their hair will be groomed as well.

Someone who isn’t interested will often appear unkempt because they don’t really care about the impression they’ll leave behind with you.

The old saying, “Dress for success,” is a simple way to remember that people do judge others by their appearance.

Whether it’s right or wrong, it happens.

If you were hiring a salesperson for your company, would you want the person who’s friendly and dressed in a suit or someone who looks like he just rolled out of bed?

3. Are they interacting with you in a positive way?

When people relate positively with you, they may express body language signals that show it.

They may look at your eyes while speaking, lean towards you, or touch you gently to accentuate a point.

4. Do they appear uninterested or distracted?

Negative signals include looking away when they should be listening, crossing their arms, constant fidgeting or tapping their foot, clearing their throat, or yawning.

This may be a sign of distrust, anger, frustration, boredom, or a lack of self-confidence.

5. Practice people watching.

The best way to learn more about body language is to spend some time observing people.

By becoming more aware of the way others react to certain situations, you’ll be better equipped to communicate effectively.

How to Boost Your Self-Esteem During Difficult Times

Attempting to boost your self-esteem during normal times is hard enough, but what happens when you’re dealing with a difficult period in your life?

Stressful issues like job loss, broken relationships, or sickness can lower our self-esteem.

We tend to take the blame and feel that, if we were “better,” these things wouldn’t have happened in the first place.

When thinking rationally, we may realize that this is untrue, but it’s harder during times of struggle to feel good about ourselves!

Here are some simple strategies you can use to give your self-esteem a boost during trying times:

1. Focus on the positive. Yes, negative things can happen in your life, but this must not be your only focus.

As I’m sure you’ve heard before: “Things could be worse.”

Try to turn your attention onto what you have that is good.

Whether it’s wonderful children, a terrific spouse, or a roof over your head, focus on what is positive and special in your life.

Not only will this make you feel better about your current situation, but you’ll also realize that these good things would not have been possible without you.

It’s time to understand that you are a positive influence in the lives of many.

Realistically, everyone has to deal with difficult times as a part of growing and maturing.

Try to remember that “this too shall pass” and keep your chin up.

2. Take time for you. With all that’s happening in your life right now, you’re under a lot of stress.

This obviously isn’t helping your feelings of low self-esteem.

More than likely, you’re not taking any time out for the most important person in your life: you.

Allow some time to relax and regroup.

It will do wonders for your mindset!

Make the time to do something that you thoroughly enjoy doing.

It can be alone or with family or a trusted friend – whatever relaxes you the most.

Read a book, take a bubble bath, make some cookies, or dance around the house to your favorite music.

Anything that can relieve some of that stress you’re feeling will make a big difference.

3. Believe that things will get better.

The power of the mind is amazing.

If you’re in a situation that you truly believe is hopeless, your chances of changing that situation worsen greatly.

If you believe things can and will get better, your chances of improving the situation are greatest.

Knowing that things will improve will also help you feel more confident about yourself.

You’ll feel more positive heading into the right direction, and your self-esteem will increase.

Life sometimes presents us with difficult situations that we’re not prepared to deal with.

During these times, consciously redirect your feelings away from the negative and towards the positive.

Finding Peace in Chaos

The majority of us live stressful and hectic lives.

It seems that we’re busy 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and never have enough time to accomplish what we need to.

Whether it’s your boss demanding overtime, your children needing your constant focus, or your spouse requesting your attention, every day seems like a whirlwind.

You love your family and need your job, but chances are, you tend to neglect yourself in the interim.

It’s extremely important that you don’t let this happen.

Put aside some time each and every day to make YOU a priority.

With a bit of creative thinking and time management, there are ways to find peace in your daily chaos.

When you turn off the outside chaos, it gives you a chance to revel in all that is good and right with your world.

And when you do this, you emerge with renewed energy and a fresh new attitude!

Follow these tips to enjoy more peace in your life:

1. Read a good book. If you’re one of many who enjoy reading, this may be just what you need.

You can spend some time immersed in a different place or time, which will help you regain your calm.

If you have a hard time focusing for long periods of time, try an audio book instead.

2. Listen to uplifting music. Music has always had wonderful and mysterious powers.

It’s used to calm children, the elderly, and even animals during times of stress and angst.

Play music that appeals to you. Dance, sing along, or just sit back and listen to its beautiful melody.

3. Reflect and meditate. Focus on everything that’s good and right with your life.

Think of those you love and what you hope for them in the future.

Think about your own future as well and what you hope to achieve in your lifetime.

Close your eyes, sit in a comfortable chair, or lie down on your bed.

Block out all sources of stress and think only positive thoughts.

4. Enjoy some family time. Spending time with those you love is often a great stress reliever.

Choose a fun activity that you can all enjoy.

You may want to play a board game or pop some popcorn and watch a movie together.

It really doesn’t matter what you do as long as you can have some fun and relax together.

5. Get some assistance from the experts. Many noted authors have written invaluable books on the topics of de-stressing and de-cluttering your life.

You can even purchase these books in an audio format and listen to them during your commute.

When you’re stuck in traffic, rather than getting upset, why not turn this time into a way to de-stress?

6. Slow down. Take your time, stop and smell the roses, and listen to the birds chirp.

Everything you need so desperately to accomplish will still be there waiting for you five minutes later.

It’s a beautiful world out there!

Four Ways to Build Your Willpower

Usually when we hear the word “willpower,” we relate it to losing weight or quitting smoking.

Willpower is extremely helpful when trying to break those bad habits, but it can also be beneficial in other areas of your life as well.

It’s important to realize that we’re not born with willpower; it’s something we must nurture and build in ourselves.

Once we strengthen our willpower, it’ll provide us an upper hand in achieving our goals.

Why?

Because we’ll develop an unshakeable focus and intensity in purpose!

So how do you go about building your willpower?

Here are four strategies to get you headed in the right direction:

1. Commitment. You must be committed to reaching your goals.

If you’re not completely committed to what you want to accomplish, there’s no way you’ll be able to develop any willpower.

To be successful in achieving your goals, you mustn’t harbor any second thoughts, excuses, or doubts.

Be honest with yourself and know that this is something you truly want to see through until the end.

Remember, just having the desire will not guarantee accomplishment.

You can desire something without firm commitment, so be sure to distinguish between the two and take the appropriate actions.

2. Call on your inner strength. Building your willpower takes perseverance.

This is a time to call on your inner strength – that extra push you need to get through the difficult times.

You’ve made a commitment to take a journey to strengthen your willpower and accomplish your most challenging goals – this is great!

The truth is, you’ll have many days of success, but there will also be days that aren’t as triumphant.

It’s on those not-so-good days that you can call on your inner strength to get you back on track.

Everyone has an inner strength and most of us have used it on more than one occasion.

Trust in it and it will get you through the rough spots!

3. Ask for support. Building your willpower to achieve a goal is a large undertaking.

Sometimes it can be overwhelming.

This is why it’s so imperative that we have support during this time.

Entrust a friend, spouse, or parent with what you’re trying to accomplish.

That way, when you hit a stumbling block, you have someone you trust to get you back on the right track.

Your support system will help you through the hard times and celebrate your successes with you.

4. Be consistent. If you have the willpower to stop smoking for one week, that’s wonderful and should be celebrated.

But the only way you’re going to build your willpower is to do whatever it takes to avoid cigarettes today, tomorrow, and forever.

Then soon enough you’ll be celebrating two weeks, two months, two years, and then forever!

This strategy applies to any goal that you’re seriously trying to accomplish.

You must be willing to keep up the positive behavior all day, every day, no exceptions, and no excuses.

Things can only improve as you continue to build your willpower. Keep pushing yourself forward!

Willpower is a tricky concept.

We all want to develop it to break a bad habit or reach a particular goal, yet in order to do so, we must be willing to go the extra mile and fully commit ourselves to our success.

Five Unique Ways to Find Work

Unfortunately, with the current state of the economy, many people are out there job hunting.

They’re applying for every open position they can find, increasing the competition for available jobs.

It’s important that you stand above the crowd.

You have to prove to your prospective employer that hiring you would be adding an asset to their company.

These suggestions may make finding that job just a bit easier:

1. Social Networking. Internet social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter are all the rage.

Many people use these sites to chat with long lost friends or find old loves, but they’re also great networking places to find employment as well!

The idea behind social networks is to build a relationship.

That means that you’ll want to show-off your value before asking desperately for a job.

It may not work overnight, but these sites have incredible word of mouth possibilities, so be diligent and keep networking and broadcasting that you’re available for work!

2. Offer services for free. Okay, I know what you’re thinking: why should you offer services for free when you don’t even have a job?

Aren’t you supposed to be making money with your skills and talents?

Yes, but offering your services for free for can actually work in your favor and set you apart from your competition.

For example, are you a talented childcare professional looking to get your foot in the door of a new day care center?

Are you an awesome cook who would love to work in a new restaurant in town?

Offer to work for them for a week for free.

If they’re pleased with your work, you may be hired on the spot, or at least when they have their first available opening.

The most important thing to remember is you have to be a top notch volunteer for that week.

You want them to discover what an asset you could be as a paid employee.

3. Write to prospective employers. Compose a letter to businesses that you’re seriously interested in.

In the letter, highlight how you’ll boost business for the company and discuss what you’d bring to the table.

If you can convince them that they’re better off with you than without you, then you’ve won the battle.

Make sure the letter is professional, grammatically correct, and confident.

Your goal is to make others understand why they need you as an employee, not to beg them for a job.

There’s a big difference, but it’s very easy to cross that line, so use good judgment.

4. Do it the old fashioned way. In this generation of faxes and emails, your resume can easily get lost in the shuffle.

Something to consider is to dress professionally and hit the pavement.

Introduce yourself, shake hands, and hand them a well-prepared resume package.

Building a relationship with someone is an important part in standing above the crowd.

It also allows a manager to put a face to a resume rather than just pick a resume up off the fax machine or out of their email inbox.

Though it may take a bit of footwork and perseverance, this may be your perfect way to make an impression when applying for a coveted job.

5. Place an ad in the newspaper or online.

When looking for a job, the first place we all tend to go is the help wanted section in the newspaper or on a classifieds website.

There we gaze over hundreds of ads and apply to as many as we possibly can.

6. Maybe you can turn the tables! This is where you can think outside the box.

What about placing your own ad telling prospective employers that you’re free to work for them?

Highlight your strengths and what position you’ll excel at.

Remember, you’re in control.

You want prospective employers to pick up the phone and call you – not to skim your ad thinking, “There’s another desperate individual begging for work.”

Looking for a job today can be challenging, but thinking a bit differently than other job hunters may be all you need to get that position you’ve been hoping for.

Five Ways to Break a Bad Habit

Let’s face it: we all have a bad habit or two that we would like to get rid of!

Whether it be smoking, biting our nails, overeating, or a host of other afflictions, it may be easier to eliminate it than you imagine.

With a little perseverance, willpower, and determination, you can be free from that nasty little habit!

Here are five strategies that can help:

1. Commitment. Make sure this is something you truly want to accomplish.

It’s wonderful to “talk the talk,” but you’ll need to back that up by “walking the walk” as well.

Be honest with yourself.

Do you truly believe that this is the right time to kick your bad habit? Remember, it has to be done for the right reasons.

Don’t let yourself be pressured by others.

Search your soul and be certain you’re doing this for only one person – you!

It’s your time and energy you’ll be using to make your goal a reality, so make your decision carefully.

2. Start a journal. Jot down every time you practice your bad habit.

This isn’t to be used as a punishment, but to give you more of an idea when your undesired behavior is occurring, so that you can better devise ways to break it.

Include your thoughts and feelings that precede or accompany the behavior.

This can give you an idea if you’re doing this when you’re under stress, bored, tired, and so on.

Though it may seem time consuming at first, recording these thoughts and actions can be a wonderful tool to speed up your success in breaking the habit.

3. Choose an alternative behavior.

This behavior can either remind you of your desire to quit or be a permanent replacement of your bad behavior with a desirable one instead.

For example, a friend of mine once put a rubber band on her wrist when she was quitting smoking.

Each time she had the urge to light up a cigarette, she would snap the rubber band on her wrist instead.

Naturally, this was only temporary to remind her not to smoke.

Some more ideas are to take a walk, read a book, sing a song, or cook.

Any activity can be used as an alternative behavior.

Of course, you don’t want to replace one bad habit with another one, but anything that can redirect your focus works well.

4. Start a replacement schedule right away.

Start immediately replacing your bad habit with your alternative, but a gradual shift may work better for you than a complete change.

You may want to start with once a week, then maybe twice week, then three times, until you’re consistently practicing your alternative behavior instead of the bad habit.

Remember, this won’t happen overnight, so please practice patience.

People learn different behaviors at a different pace.

Don’t be discouraged if your best friend stopped smoking in three weeks and you’re on your fifth week and still craving a cigarette.

5. Don’t keep this a secret. If you’ve made the decision to break a habit, tell others.

Seven Simple Ways to Overcome Boredom

Everyone at one time or another has experienced some degree of boredom.

Children are usually the quickest to say “I’m bored,” but as adults, we experience our share, too.

Don’t you sometimes wonder why you feel bored?

It may be a feeling of laziness, exhaustion, or even a lack of mental stimulation.

Whatever the case may be, we all want to keep our mind and body at its peak.

We also want to be an active player in our own lives.

When we’re feeling bored, neither of these needs is being met.

However, with a bit of creativity, there’s no reason why you ever need to experience boredom!

Here are some simple suggestions to help you conquer boredom and liven things up:

1. Read. This sounds rather obvious, doesn’t it?

Well, it is! But it’s often the simplest ideas that are the most powerful.

Reading is a wonderful activity for the mind that can transport you into another time, place or situation.

With so many genres to choose from, reading can be most interesting and even intoxicating.

If you’ve never been an avid reader, it’s possible that you simply haven’t found the right book.

Experiment until you find the one that gets you hooked.

You can also explore audio books and podcasts to keep your mind busy.

2. Sing. You may not sound like Whitney Houston, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying music.

Play some of your favorite tunes and sing at the top of your lungs!

Music provides fun, relieves stress, and can help you forget that the word “bored” was ever in your vocabulary!

3. Cook. Get in the kitchen and try some new recipes.

Remember, this isn’t about perfection.

It doesn’t make a difference if you’re a four star chef or can’t cook worth a dime.

This is about keeping the boredom at bay, while being an active player in your life.

Try a new recipe each week to add some interest to your dinner menus.

4. Adopt a pet. Animals are wonderful companions.

They’re loving, non-judgmental, and provide us with unconditional love.

Animals also keep us feeling active and young.

Most importantly, though, they keep us busy.

If you have a pet as a constant companion, you’ll never feel alone and you’ll make many wonderful memories together.

5. Cultivate your mind. Boredom is something we allow and hold control over. By actively using our mind, boredom won’t be a concern again.

Try expanding and cultivating your mind by taking a day trip to a museum, going to an art exhibit, or seeing a play.

6. Do something you’ve never done before.

Find an activity that brings you new knowledge and skills.

You may even discover some new talents you didn’t know you had when you take the initiative to try new things.

7. Take advantage of the Internet. The Internet is a pantheon of information, and can be a great “boredom terminator,” but there’s also a lot of mindless drivel.

If you decide to spend time online to combat your boredom, use that time wisely.

Each time you use the computer, attempt to walk away knowing something new.

It’ll not only keep you busy, but you’ll expand your mind as well.

No one enjoys being bored, but thankfully there are countless ways to overcome boredom and get our mind and body active again.
