Becoming a Master of Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is a powerful attribute to have, yet challenging to obtain.

Self-discipline is the ability to do whatever it takes to overcome obstacles and reach your goals, even when it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable.

It may involve saying: “no” to things you want or saying: “yes” to things you hate, but with the power of self-discipline, it becomes easier to stand up for yourself.

Most individuals would love to be more self-disciplined, yet very few people actually take action to acquire it.

Perhaps you start your day with good intentions, but veer off as the day progresses due to challenging issues, stresses, or distractions.

Thankfully, there are some strategies you can incorporate into your daily life so you can become a master of self-discipline and stay on task.

Follow these techniques to strengthen your self-discipline:

1. Be committed to the cause. Are you truly unhappy being undisciplined?

Is this something that you’re committed to improving?

Many times people claim they want to be more self- disciplined, but the truth is, they honestly don’t mind being the way they are.

2. Be honest with yourself. If this is something that you definitely want to improve in your life, it may take a bit of time and effort, but it can be done.

The only way you’ll succeed is by staying committed to the cause.

3. Write it down. The process of writing your ideas and goals helps you clarify the thoughts in your mind so you can come up with an action plan that you can stick to.

Write down all the areas that you wish to improve – your finances, relationships, career, or anything in between.

Include what changes you would like to see and how you believe will be the best way to make it happen.

4. Enlist the help of others. It’s absolutely wonderful that you’ve committed to make a positive change in your life, but don’t keep it under wraps.

Tell others that you want to make a change and boost your self-discipline.

Don’t be ashamed that you weren’t more self-disciplined from the beginning. The important thing is that you’re now taking positive action!

Those who love you will be there to support you and help you celebrate your successes.

Your support group can also help you get through the bad days and put you back on track to achieve your goals.

5. Believe in yourself. Have faith in yourself and know that if you can master your self-discipline, you can do anything!

There will be both good and bad days, but as long as you remain focused and committed, you’ll be successful in strengthening your self-discipline.

Remember to focus on the big picture and concentrate on how your body, mind, and energy will change for the better when you stay committed.

Many people admire those who are self-disciplined. These people can stay on a schedule and never seem to lose focus on what they need to accomplish.

They make more wise decisions, take action when they need to, and achieve their goals with relative ease.

Implement these strategies into your daily life and they’ll soon become habits.

Self-discipline can become your way of life – if you want it!

Becoming a Master of Self-Discipline

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is learning to master the art of self-discipline.

Learning how to tell yourself no is an important step to become a stronger, wiser and more mature person.

While practicing self-discipline isn’t easy, there are many benefits to mastering this art of personal control:

1. Self-discipline can help you achieve your goals and realize your dreams.

Many times, achieving the goals you set for yourself requires you to sacrifice time, money and energy you might prefer to spend on other things.

Are you willing to have this dedication?

2. Self-discipline helps you get more done.

By cutting out time wasters in your day, you can accomplish more every day and reach your goal sooner.

Without the self-discipline to stick to a task, you can be easily distracted by less important details.

Are you willing to remove these distractions?

3. Self-discipline helps you have greater focus.

By shutting out the things that take you away from your work, you can focus on what is most important.

You can’t say yes to everything and everyone; you must be able to focus on one thing at a time and do it well.

Focus is nearly impossible to achieve without self-discipline, and goals are nearly impossible to achieve without focus.

Are you willing to focus intensely on your goals?

4. The keys to self-discipline are simple.

If you make a commitment to someone, keep it. If you make a commitment to yourself, guard it with your life!

If you break a commitment to yourself, remember that you are human.

You need to prioritize your commitments to yourself in the same way you prioritize other people’s needs.

5. Part of self-discipline is self-respect.

In order to live the life you truly desire, you need to care for yourself properly.

Respect every part of yourself:

Respect your body. Pay attention to the signals your body sends you.

We’re masterfully created, and your body will tell you when something is out of balance.

Listen to the signals and treat yourself with VIP handling to be the strongest and most productive you can be!

Consider adding exercise or yoga to your daily routine to help you achieve balance in your body and mind.

Nurture your mind by filling it with positive, engaging information.

Read books for the sheer joy of learning.
Engage in meaningful discussions with people of all backgrounds and philosophies.
Avoid negative people and conversations.
Listen to joyful, uplifting music instead of letting the television flood your mind with commercialism and negativity.

Respect the spiritual part of yourself.

It’s important to feel connected to something larger than you are.

Connect with your Creator by meditating, praying or spending time in nature.

Attend worship services at a local church, if that’s part of your belief system.
Allow the spiritual side of yourself to become stronger and more important to you.
Base decisions on the greater good rather than simply what feels good at the time.

Respect your physical health.

Taking good care of your health requires self-discipline.

Your body will help you accomplish amazing things if you treat it properly!

Eat a healthy diet.
Get plenty of rest and exercise.
Strive to maintain a healthy weight.
Refuse to smoke.
Avoid over indulging in caffeine or alcohol.

Respect your time.

This includes your work time, family time, playtime and personal time.

Make space in your life for every area.

Schedule family time and alone time just as you do work time and other obligations.

By adding everything to your written agenda, you create a priority within yourself and self-discipline helps you stick to your priorities.

If you want to live your life to the fullest and achieve your goals, self-discipline is a must.

Learning how to control your impulses and make strong decisions is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

Self-discipline can bring you the life you always wanted.

Develop Daily Discipline and Reach Your Goals

The ability to control yourself might be the most important skill you can possess. You probably already know how to get in great shape, eat properly, find a better-paying job, and succeed in a lot of other ways. The problem is, you’re not doing those things.

What you lack is enough discipline. Discipline allows you to use what you know. Without it, you’re just a dusty library of information.

Develop the discipline necessary to excel in life with these strategies:

Rest is important. Fatigue is a killer of discipline. Have you ever noticed that your discipline is weakest at night? That’s when you’re more likely to waste time. You’re more likely to eat poorly. You’re more likely to send an ill-advised text message to your ex. If you have a task to complete that requires discipline, schedule it when your energy is at its peak.

Get enough sleep each night to be at your best. Plan naps if the afternoon if possible.

Exercise isn’t just good for you, it’s good for the development of discipline. Exercising regularly is challenging both physically and mentally. It’s not easy to get yourself to exercise every day. The slight physical discomfort also requires discipline to endure. You also have the benefit of enhancing your health at the same time.
Get organized. Getting and staying organized is another gentle way to build your discipline. Start with just one part of your home. Declutter and clean. Then move on to another part of the house. Clutter also saps your discipline and willpower.

If you’re naturally messy, getting organized might be more challenging than you think. Take small steps and avoid losing ground. It doesn’t do much good if you clean a room, and it returns to a messy state in a few days. Stay on top of it!

Learn persistence. It’s questionable if you can have discipline without persistence. Fortunately, there are countless opportunities to practice each day. Become a master at completing tasks.

Fold all the laundry instead of leaving part of it for later.
Wash all the dishes instead of leaving that gross, greasy dish until tomorrow.
Whenever you start to feel a little bored, tired, hungry, or uncomfortable, continue with your current task for at least a few more minutes. You’ve learned how to quit easily. Teach yourself how to persist after you want to stop. Even three minutes is an improvement and a good starting point.

Meditate daily. From a distance, meditation looks easy. After all, how hard can it be to just sit there and focus on your breathing, right? Try it once and see how hard it can be. Meditation teaches focus and the ability to persevere when you’re emotionally and physically uncomfortable.

It’s hard not to think, “How much longer?” when you’re in the middle of a meditation session. Start with just a few minutes and add a few more minutes each week. When you can sit for an hour straight, you can do anything.

Learn to forgive easily. Negative emotions consume a lot of energy and make self-discipline much more challenging. When you’re consumed with negative thoughts, it’s hard to do anything productive. Let go of the negative energy inside of you and you’ll have more self-control.

Self-control is the key to making progress. You already know enough. Sometimes, gathering more information is just an excuse to stall.

Take the knowledge you already have and put it to work. Learn to do things you don’t necessarily feel like doing. The alternative is to live an unfulfilling life.
