Becoming a Master of Self-Discipline

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is learning to master the art of self-discipline.

Learning how to tell yourself no is an important step to become a stronger, wiser and more mature person.

While practicing self-discipline isn’t easy, there are many benefits to mastering this art of personal control:

1. Self-discipline can help you achieve your goals and realize your dreams.

Many times, achieving the goals you set for yourself requires you to sacrifice time, money and energy you might prefer to spend on other things.

Are you willing to have this dedication?

2. Self-discipline helps you get more done.

By cutting out time wasters in your day, you can accomplish more every day and reach your goal sooner.

Without the self-discipline to stick to a task, you can be easily distracted by less important details.

Are you willing to remove these distractions?

3. Self-discipline helps you have greater focus.

By shutting out the things that take you away from your work, you can focus on what is most important.

You can’t say yes to everything and everyone; you must be able to focus on one thing at a time and do it well.

Focus is nearly impossible to achieve without self-discipline, and goals are nearly impossible to achieve without focus.

Are you willing to focus intensely on your goals?

4. The keys to self-discipline are simple.

If you make a commitment to someone, keep it. If you make a commitment to yourself, guard it with your life!

If you break a commitment to yourself, remember that you are human.

You need to prioritize your commitments to yourself in the same way you prioritize other people’s needs.

5. Part of self-discipline is self-respect.

In order to live the life you truly desire, you need to care for yourself properly.

Respect every part of yourself:

Respect your body. Pay attention to the signals your body sends you.

We’re masterfully created, and your body will tell you when something is out of balance.

Listen to the signals and treat yourself with VIP handling to be the strongest and most productive you can be!

Consider adding exercise or yoga to your daily routine to help you achieve balance in your body and mind.

Nurture your mind by filling it with positive, engaging information.

Read books for the sheer joy of learning.
Engage in meaningful discussions with people of all backgrounds and philosophies.
Avoid negative people and conversations.
Listen to joyful, uplifting music instead of letting the television flood your mind with commercialism and negativity.

Respect the spiritual part of yourself.

It’s important to feel connected to something larger than you are.

Connect with your Creator by meditating, praying or spending time in nature.

Attend worship services at a local church, if that’s part of your belief system.
Allow the spiritual side of yourself to become stronger and more important to you.
Base decisions on the greater good rather than simply what feels good at the time.

Respect your physical health.

Taking good care of your health requires self-discipline.

Your body will help you accomplish amazing things if you treat it properly!

Eat a healthy diet.
Get plenty of rest and exercise.
Strive to maintain a healthy weight.
Refuse to smoke.
Avoid over indulging in caffeine or alcohol.

Respect your time.

This includes your work time, family time, playtime and personal time.

Make space in your life for every area.

Schedule family time and alone time just as you do work time and other obligations.

By adding everything to your written agenda, you create a priority within yourself and self-discipline helps you stick to your priorities.

If you want to live your life to the fullest and achieve your goals, self-discipline is a must.

Learning how to control your impulses and make strong decisions is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

Self-discipline can bring you the life you always wanted.

I am devoting some “me” time to my schedule.

Each week I am adding myself to my planner so I can take time out for me.

I do this because I value my health and well being.

My body, mind and spirit benefit when I recharge my batteries.

I make dates with myself to spend time away from every day tasks.

I am important enough to be in my calendar.

I formally designate a time for myself because if I didn’t, I would invariably find something else to do.

“Me” time is for me to do whatever I please, free from guilt or pressure.

Often, I simply relax on my porch drinking a cup of coffee.

Other times, I take a warm bath and soak away my troubles.

Exercising is another enjoyable way to burn my stresses.

During my moments alone, I spend time developing myself as an individual.

I devote time to fine tuning my talents. Sometimes I use the time to improve myself as a professional.

In order to free up my schedule to allow personal time, I delegate tasks to others or decline invitations that may conflict with my planned time alone.

The people around me support and respect me in my quest for personal time because they know they get a better me as a result.

I spend time alone to energize myself and live my life to its fullest potential.

I can communicate through a conflict at an expert level.

When I am faced with conflict I know how to handle myself.

My first resort is communication. Good communication is cool water for a fiery conflict.

In order to communicate effectively, I take my time to respond, never answering abruptly.

I take deep breaths and speak slowly.

I listen to the other person’s point of view. I can listen to others without interruption.

When someone is talking, I am genuinely listening and not just planning my next statement.

When I communicate with others, I respect their point of view.

My goal in communicating is not to be right, but to be work well with others.

I simply need to find a common ground for us to get along and accomplish our goals.

When I speak, I communicate my point of view in a way that is easy to understand.

My words and tone are chosen carefully.

When others speak to me, I repeat back what I hear to be sure that I understand them.

When I speak to them, I ask them to do the same, so I know they fully understand my meaning.

My experience has taught me that people communicate differently.

People of different genders or cultures communicate in many diverse ways.

I am aware of these differences and honor them when I speak to others.

My speech is free from accusations and whining. I can share my feelings and ask for what I need in order to effect change.

When my speech is clear, I get the results I desire from every conversation.

I can resolve personal conflicts peacefully.

When trouble comes my way I can peacefully resolve the issue.

I grab hold of the positive energy that swirls around me and I use it to help resolve any conflicts that arise in my life.

Resolving conflicts quickly with a peaceful nature helps to protect and heal my mind and spirit.

I let go of fear, frustration and resentment. I embrace peaceful conflict resolution because it is what is right.

I am able to emotionally detach myself from tense situations and I look at the conflict objectively.

I feel empowered and serene when I view my conflicts in a mature way and deal with them peacefully.

My positive energy helps me to face my conflicts with confidence.

I am a strong person and a peaceful warrior for serenity.

Today I will let go of negative emotions and face conflicts fearlessly.

I will embrace my abilities to remain calm and solve my problems in a peaceful manner.

I will resolve my conflicts and enjoy the serenity that surrounds me.

How to Shed the Winter Weight Gain

If you’ve indulged over the holiday season or cut down on your activity during the winter months, you may have packed on a few extra pounds.

Wouldn’t you like to shed that winter weight gain before the warm weather returns?

Rather than choosing the latest diet of the week, you could, instead, implement some sound strategies that have been proven to be effective in losing weight and keeping it off.

Here are some tips to help you say “good bye” to those extra pounds forever:

1. Exercise

Staying indoors more during the winter doesn’t mean you need to be less active!

Follow these exercise techniques to bring you a variety of activities to tone up and slim down.

Begin slowly.

Don’t overdo it when you begin to exercise – you’ll only strain muscles!

Invest in a good pair of walking shoes and begin by walking for fifteen minutes per day.

When you feel your body adjusting to the fifteen minutes, walk longer.

Do this with any exercise, inside or out, to build a healthy, strong, and slimmer body.

2. Enjoy variety.

Doing the same exercise over and over again is a good way to fail before you begin. Include an assortment of exercises in your plan.

Make it fun!

For example, combine yoga with strength training.

If you don’t have strength training equipment, use canned foods or other items as your weights.

Any activity that gets you moving is an exercise.

Play actively with your pets or children.

Put on some music and dance while you cook or clean house.

Instead of sitting on the couch, ride an exercise bike while you watch TV.

Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

3. Enlist a friend.

The easiest way to keep up with your exercise routine is to have someone by your side who also wants to lose weight.

Remind each other how important your weight loss goals are.

4. Set goals and keep track of them.

Get a diary or notebook and write down your goals.

Keep track of how much weight you’re losing and what types of exercises you’re doing.

How to Eat Well Year-Round

Eating nutritiously year-round is the best way to keep off those extra winter pounds.

It will also help you lose excess weight, give your body the nutrients it craves, and make you feel good!

Here are some simple healthy eating tips:

1. Try to stick to a 1,500 to 2,000 a day calorie diet.

Yes, calories do count.

If you’re unsure what your caloric intake should be (as it can vary from age, sex, and even height), enlist your doctor’s help or ask a nutritionist.

2. Eat a well-balanced variety of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

You don’t need to become a vegetarian, but including as many fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet as possible will bring you a plethora of benefits.

Substitute fruits and vegetables for unhealthy snacks and calorie-laden desserts.

Can’t find fresh fruits during the winter months? Frozen fruits with no added sugar are a good backup choice.

3. Keep your portions at acceptable levels.

Don’t pile on that food!

Just because fast-food restaurants are supersizing everything, it doesn’t mean you should too.

4. Eat good carbs.

Many fruits, veggies, legumes, and grains are full of the good carbohydrates your body needs.

They’re also high in vitamins, fibers, and minerals and free of cholesterol.

5. Drink water.

Every cell in your body needs water to function properly.

Drinking lots of water will not only keep you well hydrated, but it also can help you lose weight.

For example, a glass of water before a meal can help you control overeating.

Shedding that winter weight is a reachable goal if you follow these tips.

However, don’t feel like you have to make each of these changes tomorrow.

Sometimes when people make too many drastic changes at once they have a harder time sticking with their plan.

Work on making one or two of these changes each week to get used to them.

Before you know it, these weight loss strategies will be second nature to you and you’ll avoid those winter pounds altogether!

How to Be Open-Minded to New Ideas

If you have definite ideas about how things are or how they should be, you’ve probably had someone tell you to “keep an open mind.”

Having an open mind is important to succeed in life.

Embracing, or at least considering, new ideas and technologies is vital to our personal growth.

Are you willing to consider someone else’s opinion?

Can you look at facts that may seem suspect and analyze them without bias?

If you’re open-minded, you can be flexible when met with new ideas.

It means you can adapt to new experiences.

Being able to think critically is a vital component of being open-minded.

In our quickly changing technological world, it’s important to keep an open mind in order to keep up and stay current, rather than missing out on all the new things around us.

It’s also important to be willing to change your views when you’re given new facts.

This could prove crucial depending on your chosen profession.

For example, as a police officer or lawyer, being willing to see things from a different perspective could help you achieve greater successes.

Here are some ways to learn how to be open-minded to new ideas:

1. Decide now that you don’t have to be right all the time.

While it’s not unusual for some people to be obsessed with being right, it’s not something that’s looked favorably upon.

No one can be right all the time, not even you!

Try to be relaxed when discussing new ideas rather than having a knee-jerk reaction to be right.

2. Recognize that there are many reasons why people have certain beliefs.

They may be from a different country or have different life experiences that have shaped those beliefs.

Someone born at an earlier time would also see things differently than you.

3. Learn to listen carefully.

Rather than jumping in with your opinion, let the other person finish speaking.

Then use active, or reflective, listening to understand and clarify their ideas:

Repeat back to them what you understood.

Respectfully ask questions when you don’t understand or agree with their standpoint.

4. Look at things from a different perspective.

Before deciding that a new idea doesn’t have merit, consider doing some research to understand the concept better.

Consider the way the other person explained the idea and see if it makes more sense after you’ve researched it.

5. “Walk a mile” in someone else’s shoes.

Spend some time volunteering in your community.

This will allow you to see things from a different perspective and with certain limitations.

6. Take time to try something new.

There’s no better way to open your mind to new ideas than to attempt a new task.

Learning new skills or taking up a new hobby can open your mind in ways that nothing else will.

Give it a try; you may be pleasantly surprised!

It’s true that being open-minded can be an advantage in many aspects of life, however, don’t be too quick to become open-minded about everything.

There may be some deeply held beliefs that you don’t want to leave by the wayside in order to embrace openness. That’s okay!

While you’re learning to be open-minded to new ideas, remember that it’s fine and good to hold onto some beliefs and stand up for what you believe in.

Just because an idea is new to you doesn’t mean you must agree with it in order to be open-minded.

Having an open mind will strengthen your skills to evaluate new ideas intelligently and choose truth in your life.

Tips to Overcome the Fear of Speaking in Public

Somehow, you’ve suddenly found yourself responsible for giving a speech!

Don’t fret; you can learn how to overcome the fear of public speaking.

While some people seem to have a natural propensity for public speaking, no one is exempt from nervousness.

What can you do?

There are specific action steps you can take to help alleviate your nerves, even if you’ve never stood in front of a group of people before.

Here are some things you can do to help you get through your presentation:

1. Be prepared. The best thing to do to help you overcome your fear of speaking is to be prepared!

Once you know your material and have your speech ready, you’re ready to prepare for the final part – speaking.

Having a well-practiced speech will give you confidence.

You’re the expert on this material, after all, or you wouldn’t be speaking in the first place.

2. Practice making your presentation so you can get into a rhythm and know how the presentation will flow.

Say your speech aloud to practice difficult words or names and to time yourself.

If you have other presenters, practice as a group and be open to feedback from others.

Practice using any slides or power point presentations you’ve included in your speech.

3. Strengthen your presentation. There are simple things you can do to make your speech go from ordinary to extraordinary.

4. Making eye contact, pausing at certain points, and having visual aids are things that will bring your speech up a notch.

Learning these things ahead of time and including them in your practice sessions will alleviate some nerves.

Find one or two things to focus on the first time you speak.

Very few people make the perfect speech every time so the key is to learn from each presentation to make future speeches even better.

5. Be proud of doing your best. Keep in mind that everyone who speaks gets nervous ahead of time, some more so than others.

Once you consider you aren’t alone in your feelings, it makes it easier to deal with them.

6. Refrain from comparing yourself to others. There will always be someone better and someone worse than you. Just do your personal best and be happy that you’ve given it your all.

Find a mentor, or someone who is more experienced in public speaking, to ask advice. Learn from their mistakes.

7. Practice speaking in public. If you’re going to be speaking frequently, you can find ways to get more practice.

8. Take a class on public speaking, or volunteer at a community organization. The more you practice, the better you’ll get.

If you care about animals, kids, or social issues, there are many venues for you to speak, go find a local club or school and volunteer your time.

9. Start off small. Practice speaking in a classroom full of children first.

Read aloud during religious services at your place of worship.

If you have a favorite hobby, volunteer to teach a class about that hobby at your local library.

Don’t worry about how perfect your speech is. In six months, it won’t matter.

What will matter is that you’ve done your best, improved, and possibly inspired one person with your words.

That’s what it’s all about, anyway.

Create a Better Work-Life Balance and Get Your Life Back

Do you feel like you’re so busy that you don’t have time for a life?

Do you feel as if you’re constantly running behind?

There are ways you can learn to negotiate your work life so you become more productive.

Once you become more organized at work, you can more fully enjoy your time away from work as well.

If you’re not stressing about your job, you can relax when you’re at home and live a more balanced life.

How can you be more productive?

What can you do to improve the quality of your life?

Here are a few ideas to find work-life balance:

1. Slow Down. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and it seems like you’re running in circles, sometimes the best thing you can do is to slow down.

Take the time to prioritize.

Going faster doesn’t mean you’re more productive or that you accomplish more things.

Doing things right the first time will save time in the long run.

2. Stop Procrastinating. There are certain things about any job that are mundane.

If you take the time to do the tedious parts of your job, you can breathe a sigh of relief sooner.

Schedule an afternoon to finish those pesky tasks so you can move on to more interesting (or even fun!) things.

3. Share The Work. You don’t have to do everything!

Recruit some help from your fellow employees or family members.

Delegate responsibilities, and you’ll get everything done in a timely manner.

This facilitates teamwork and makes everyone feel like they’ve made a contribution.

It also gives you some relief while your helpers gain a sense of accomplishment.

Don’t make things complicated. As humans, we tend to make extra work for ourselves even if it’s unnecessary.

Why reinvent the wheel?

If something works, don’t try to fix it.

Always remember the KISS method: Keep It Simple Silly.

4. De-clutter. Streamlining your workspace helps you focus on your work.

Arrange your desk so you can reach what you need the moment you need it.

Sifting through multiple piles costs you valuable time, causes frustration, and can even prevent you from completing important tasks!

5. Learn To Say No. When your workload is maxed out, be assertive about saying Help your boss understand that your plate is full and you’re not being insubordinate.

6. Stay within your scheduled hours. Once you’ve learned to keep work from cutting into your personal time, you will become more empowered to enjoy life outside the office walls.

7. Implement Technology. Use technology to your advantage.

A small time investment in entering information, such as addresses and other contact information, into a computer system can save volumes of time later.

Once you’ve implemented a system, it’s much easier to make changes to information and stay current.

It also makes it easier to keep up with detailed customer information.

8. Eliminate Distractions. If your personal life interferes with your job, set some boundaries.

Be firm when you have work to finish.

Leave your cell phone in the car or switch it off during work hours.

Discourage frequent personal calls or visits.

Delay socializing with co-workers until your work is done.

Once you’ve learned to streamline your workday, you’ll find that you no longer dread going to work and bringing it all home!

Imagine knowing that you’re ready to start your day instead of playing catch up from yesterday.

How To Accept Criticism

Criticism is a double-edged sword.

On one hand it can improve you, but on the other hand, it can shatter your confidence if you allow it.

Knowing how to deal with criticism is vital to improving yourself in both your professional and personal lives.

How do you feel when someone criticizes you?

Maybe you’ve had someone criticize your work, effort, or personal aspects of your life.

You may feel hurt or angry and you may even become defensive.

There are so many times in life when we have to deal with criticism that it’s essential to learn how to deal with it.

Certainly you don’t want someone else’s opinion to prevent you from having a happy and productive life, right?

Dealing with Constructive Criticism vs. Destructive Criticism

The first step in dealing with criticism is to figure out whether it’s worth considering.

Sometimes we may confuse personal attacks with criticism. They’re definitely not the same!

There are two kinds of criticism: constructive criticism, which is intended to help us improve and keep communication open, and destructive criticism, which is used to humiliate and control.

Whether you’re dealing with criticism in the work place, at home, or with friends, it’s essential to be able to deal with critical comments.

Your feelings will inevitably be hurt, so the first thing to do is give yourself a few minutes to process the information before reacting.

Take some deep breaths, and determine why the criticism was delivered.

Thinking before you react will help you avoid unnecessary conflict, pain, or embarrassment.

If you determine there’s no truth to the criticism, you may find it appropriate to use a technique called distracting, where you calmly acknowledge that you heard what the other person said.

Don’t become defensive or upset, just acknowledge the statement and leave it at that.

You can acknowledge the other speaker with a general response, such as “I appreciate you sharing your opinion.” or “You might be right.”

Leaving an open end doesn’t allow room for more argument. It will also put the other person at ease, and may even allow you to change the subject.

One of the hardest things to do when you’re criticized is to admit that it’s true.

You don’t have to be overly apologetic.

You can always say, “I’m sorry” or “It’s my mistake” and move on.

By admitting fault, you’re taking ownership of the problem and you’re proving that you’re a mature adult.

Once you’ve admitted your mistake, strive to get past the barrier and heal the rift between you.

When communicating, strive not to use the word “but” when admitting the truth of the criticism.

That puts stipulations on why you were wrong. Swallow your pride and go on.

On the other hand, if you’re not sure whether the criticism is justified or not, you may want to request more detailed feedback.

This will not only help you gain more information, but also help the other person clarify the facts.

An example of this might be if someone tells you that your work is sloppy.

By finding out their expectations, you can deliver what they’re looking for instead of fumbling around trying to figure out what “sloppy” means.

Everyone has different expectations, and a simple adjustment might be all you need to resolve the criticism.

If you take criticism too personally, you’re letting someone else be in charge of your life!

Don’t let others rattle you, it’s really not worth the energy or frustration.

And remember: you can’t control others; you can only control yourself.

So that means you have a choice in your response to criticism: you can ignore the criticism, use it as a motivator, or become upset and angry.

The choice is yours.

Conquering Anxiety With Affirmations

It can be difficult to do anything with your normal passion and excitement if you are feeling anxious.

Anxiety can squelch your motivation and control your life – if you let it.

If you have experienced an anxiety attack, you may be fearful of having another one, but living in such fear means you are living in a state of perpetual anxiety.

This can happen just because you are afraid of the anxiety itself!

Those who have never experienced an anxiety attack or high levels of anxiety cannot understand how hard this cycle can be to break.

If you believe you have to live in a constant state of fear and anxiety you’re wrong – you really can learn how to deal with the anxiety in a more positive manner.

Letting Go of the Anxiety

Worrying about the next anxiety attack can cause you to be in a constant state of fear that may keep you from doing the things you want or need to do.

Anxiety can be crippling, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be.

It can be hard to stop the cycle once you develop the pattern of having anxiety-related feelings and anxiety attacks, but it isn’t impossible.

You can overcome the anxiety cycle by using tools that are easy and convenient and you may be able to overcome the cycle in less time than you thought possible.

Using Positive Affirmations to Overcome Anxiety

One way you can conquer anxiety is by using positive affirmations.

These statements are a simple way to change your thought processes so you aren’t always waiting for anxiety to take charge of your life.

Many people create their own affirmations while others use affirmations from websites or books.

It doesn’t matter where you find the affirmations, just as long as you begin using them effectively throughout your day.

Choose affirmations that speak to you and help you overcome your fear of anxiety.

Affirmations must focus on the present and they should be about you, not anyone else.

Examples of Affirmations to Defeat Anxiety

Anxiety affirmations are simply positive statements that you can say to yourself in those moments when you start to feel anxious.

You can use these at any time and for any reason to calm your nerves and bring peace of mind.

For example, you can tell yourself, “I can overcome my fears because I am in control,” or “I no longer need to be frightened. I allow myself to receive the light of who I am.”

Any statement that replaces the anxious thoughts with a positive feeling will work.

Say these affirmations during anxious moments as often as you need to and continue affirming the positive thoughts until the anxious moment has passed.

By using these affirmations when you are feeling anxious, you are literally reprogramming your mind.

In doing so, you will be able to think in a more positive manner, and you can also use these affirmations to refocus your mind away from your anxiety and fear.

Every time you use an affirmation, you leave less and less room for the irrational fears and the anxiety that have ruled your life for far too long.
