How to Think Positively in Tough Times

Sometimes it’s hard to look on the bright side even when things are going fairly well.

When you’re going through tough times, gaining the “glass is half full” mentality can be a feat in itself!

Don’t Get Overwhelmed

When you’re in the middle of a stressful situation, it’s important to disallow over-anxious and over-analyzed thoughts.

You really don’t want to overwhelm yourself with an over-stimulated mind because the added stress will only strain your mind further and you’ll find it nearly impossible to think positively.

Ways To Look On The Bright Side

How you go about transforming difficult situations into positive outcomes will differ each time.

Your goal should be to discover a set of strategies that works well for you.

It might take some experimenting, but that’s okay!

Consider the following ways to achieve a positive mindset:

Avoid feeling sorry for yourself.

Feeling sorry for yourself only wastes precious brainpower and it’s not going to help you out in the long run.

Instead, strive to gain the wisdom to accept your situation and focus on solutions, instead of sorrow or worry.

Everyone has to travel through tough times at some point; it’s just a part of life!

Find the life lesson. It may be hard to find the silver lining, but it’s almost always hiding somewhere.

All of your experiences – both good and bad – contribute to your life’s knowledge.

Be thankful for what you know!

Reflect on the fact that you’ve gained wisdom and knowledge that may help you make better decisions and cope well in the future.

Start small. Take some time to reflect on the difficult situation.

If you’re having trouble finding a positive manner of thinking, just start by smiling at yourself in the mirror.

You might not feel happy right away, but it sure will be hard not to feel happy when you see a beautiful smiling face staring back at you!

You can also consider the use of positive affirmations to help you through tough times.

The more frequently you repeat your affirmations, the sooner you’ll ingrain the positive beliefs into your subconscious.

Stop worrying. When you’re going through a tough situation, sometimes your worries can overtake you.

The future might seem scary and bleak and you’re not sure what you should do.

As you know, worrying isn’t going to help the situation in the least.

Instead, the moment worry creeps in, redirect your mind onto something positive or reassuring.

Stay calm and start brainstorming some practical solutions.

Be brave about change. Change is inevitable and most often you don’t even notice that it’s happening.

During tough times, however, you’re likely more sensitive to the changes that are taking place.

Think about change as an exciting adventure.

You’ll never know what you can discover and learn until you’re open to change.

Help From Others

When you’re going through a tough time, your instincts might be to pull inward.

Perhaps you don’t want people to see you in a vulnerable state or you want to solve your problems all on your own.

However, you must resist this urge to shut people out!

Remember, you’re never alone.

Your family and loved ones are always there to help you get through any challenging situation, but only if you allow them to!

Of course, your loved ones may not be able to solve your problem outright, but they can provide you with a fantastic support system and help you brainstorm different avenues for problem solving.

As hard as it may seem now, it is possible for you to think positively when you’re enduring tough times.

How to Help Your Children Develop a Positive Outlook on Life

When you equip your children a positive outlook, you’re setting them up for a happy and successful life.

Don’t believe me?

Well, who do you think would be most successful?

The person who believes he can achieve anything, become whomever he wants, and follows up with swift action, or:

The person who complains about anything, is indifferent about everything, and gets nothing done out of feelings of hopelessness.

Obvious, huh?

You see, children have such an amazing ability to learn.

They’re babies one day, and the next they’re learning language and life skills at a rate much faster than any adult can.

This gives us, as parents, a very important and sometimes overwhelming duty: to teach our children every day.

There are many things you can do each day to foster a positive outlook in your kids, but having a positive outlook yourself is the most important thing you can do to help your children grow.

Let them know they make a positive difference in your life and love them unconditionally.

Keep the following tips in mind to help your children develop a positive outlook:

1. Lead by example. From a young age, your children pick up on more than you know.

While you may live by the notion that you should always put your kids first, you also have to concentrate on your own self-development.

Because, when you think positively, so will your kids.

2. Watch your reactions. Just as with leading by example, you must watch your reactions, especially when things go awry.

If someone gets hurt or you learn some bad news, fight the urge to have a negative reaction. If you yell or outwardly worry, you’ll affect your children.

Teach your children that sometimes things don’t go our way, but eventually the tides will turn.

3. Find the silver lining in challenges. As your children learn and develop, they’ll be faced with all sorts of challenges.

Some of them will be easy, while others are more challenging.

Be sure to point out the silver lining in any challenge your child may be facing.

It’ll help them to see your point of view when they’re facing challenges alone.

4. Help them change their thinking. When you’re child is in the midst of a tough challenge, he may bring up the idea of giving up.

Do your best to bring wisdom to the situation to know when your child simply needs to be pushed further.

Perhaps there’s an angle to the problem that your child hasn’t tried yet.

Nudge them in the right direction until they find the success they seek.

5. Promote laughter.

Laughter breeds happiness and positive feelings. Your children will each have a unique sense of humor.

Play into your child’s humorous side by promoting situations that your child finds funny.

You can play games, go to shows, or simply have a good time together as a family.

A Happy Healthy Home

When you remember to treat your children in a calm and loving manner, they’ll be more likely to do the same.

If your child tends to panic, don’t scold them for this behavior.

Put them at ease as best as you can and show them that there’s a solution to their problem.

If you panic, the situation may spiral into an unhealthy cycle.

In the end, there’s no right or wrong way to raise your kids.

Do what’s best for your family in the way you know how.

When you maintain a happy and healthy home, your children will learn to have hope and think positively!

How to Surround Yourself with Positive People

One of the best ways to achieve your goals is to surround yourself with positive people.

The energy these people have never seems to let them down, and they are achieving the great goals in life that they desire and dream about.

Positive people can help you stay on track and energize you toward your own goals.

Many times these successful people share the same goals you have and are happy to pass on their wisdom and their techniques.

So how do you find these positive, like-minded people?

Here are 5 tips to help you find them, network with them, and glean valuable information and advice:

Although it may sound silly, smiling puts forth an image that instantly draws people towards you, especially other positive people.

Having and showcasing a good perspective of life’s ups and downs makes other people want to be around you.

Positivism is often a difficult frame of mind to sustain all the time, and therefore, people are always looking for a way to be more optimistic.

1. Staying positive is the building block of achieving your successes, as its opposite is futile.

Smile and you’ll attract other positive people!

2. Communicate Positively.

Although we all have rough days when nothing seems to be going right, the last thing you want do is complain and whine.

No one likes a complainer, right?

For example, if someone were to ask you in a friendly manner, “how are you today?” don’t shoot back that “life stinks” or that you’re just “alive” or something to that effect. Instead, take a moment – and a breath – and then reply with optimism, even if you’re having a tough day.

After all, positive people don’t waste their time or energy on complainers or negative people.

Even if you’re not feeling all that positive, by remaining optimistic in your outlook you’ll still attract positive people to you.

3. Think Positively.

Keeping a level head on your trek toward success is one key to obtaining your objectives.

Thinking positively – even through disappointment – will enable you to find the good in every situation and attract the positive people who share this vision.

Even if you don’t really subscribe to these positive thoughts at first, or you find positive thinking difficult, sooner or later making yourself think positively will create a pattern of positive thoughts in your brain.

We’ve all got energy within us and we have the choice to use it constructively or destructively.

If you want to attract positive people to network, then you’ll notice they try to be upbeat and optimistic, even during difficult times.

4. Act Positively.

It isn’t enough to smile, communicate, and think positively when pursuing your goal.

You must also put forth actions to substantiate this positivism.

For example, perhaps you thought you could get a promotion in the past, but then sat idly by while someone else snatched it up.

This time, transform those positive thoughts into action!

Showing your boss and employees that you are proactive and positive will set you up for more successes.

5. Reach Out.

Lastly, reach out to people at your work, in your circle of friends, or even to people on the street who seem to exemplify positivism.

Ask them what it is that makes them continue to be positive and reach their objectives.

Seeking out positive people will not only give you valuable information to help you reach your goals, but you will also become a successful person with your own network of positive friends and role models.

Being positive and exemplifying positivism attracts others. After all, like attracts like.

People enjoy being around others with similar attitudes and, by maintaining a positive mindset, you’ll surely lead yourself to those successful people you seek.

I repel all negativity.

I repel all negativity with a positive attitude and an open mind.

My upbeat personality attracts other positive people who surround me with an impenetrable circle of joy.

Joy clings to me like a magnet in every situation that I come across.

Even when I face trials, I wear a smile on my lips because nothing can steal my joy.

My smile helps me to deter negativity because negativity cannot co-exist with enthusiasm.

I radiate confidence by being thankful and encouraging others.

Living a life of thanksgiving helps me to remain positive, even in times of crisis.

My attitude is consistently pleasant even if the world around me is unpredictable and pessimistic.

Before I even attempt something new, I believe that I am a winner in my own mind.

My mind is filled with positive thoughts, which collide with any destructive thoughts that may try to sneak in.

I lend an ear only to things of value. When people walk up to me and begin to speak, they can sense that I am an optimistic and peaceful person.

I repel gossip by ignoring it and refusing to take part in it.

I truly believe that there is good in everyone, and I treat people that way.

People respect me because I stay away from negative conversations.

My friends know that they can come to me for an uplifting word when they feel discouraged.

Today, I am thinking constructive thoughts. I walk with confidence because I believe that all things will work out in the end.

Hope is my daily melody.

Every day I wake up with renewed strength and a resolve to make today a great day.

I arm myself with positivity and take along a winning attitude.

As I step out into the world, I begin to hear the beautiful melody of hope that follows me wherever I go.

Even when others choose to play the soundtrack of despair, I dance to the tune of hope.

My ears are trained to listen only to the sound of hope and to ignore all other noise.

I refrain from listening to negative news that will only try to rob me of my ability to hear the beat.

With so much negativity around me, I must actively seek the good in the world in order to remain hopeful.

When I focus on the good characteristics of others, I am able to have hope.

My life is a song filled with assurance.

Although there are no guarantees in life, I am confident that the life choices that I am making today are taking me in the right direction.

In the end, I know that I will succeed.

I sing my song to the world so others can be uplifted during their time of sorrow.

With each note I sing, hearts are mended and faith is restored to those around me.

When I believe I myself, I inadvertently give others permission to do the same.

Today, I choose to be hopeful in the midst of despair because I am sure that the days ahead of me are brighter than those behind me.

With hope as my melody, I dance forth into my future with grace.

Five Positive Ways to Express Your Gratitude

Expressing gratitude can be difficult for some people. Often times, gratitude is mixed in with other feelings like jealousy, envy, embarrassment, or insecurity.

Why? Because it can be humbling to admit that we need help from others.

It is important to realize that expressing gratitude does not mean you are weaker or inferior in any way.

Gratitude simply expresses your appreciation and shows the respect you have for others.

By focusing on an attitude of gratitude, you’ll find that it’s a lot easier to express how you feel. Plus, people will be far more willing to help someone who respects and appreciates them.

Here are Five Ways to Express Gratitude:

Keep it simple. Instead of thinking about how best to express your thanks, just say it. Tell the person “Thank you” or “I appreciate it” and let that be the end of it.Gratitude is something that can be easily expressed just as long as it’s genuine.
Expressing gratitude is as important as anything else in your relationships because it builds trust and respect.
Write a letter. Sometimes the best thing we can do is use the power of the written word to express our thanks. Get a thank you card or a piece of stationary and write a letter.It’s one of the most personal ways of expressing gratitude nowadays, especially since few people take the time to write by hand. Again, you can keep it simple by letting the person know that you appreciate them.
You can hand deliver the letter or drop it in the mail so it can be a nice surprise in between the stack of junk mail and bills.
Give a gift. When someone does something nice for you, a nice way to express your appreciation is to give a small “thank you” present.This doesn’t have to be anything costly or extravagant, just something that shows that you appreciate what they have done for you.
For instance, you might give a coffee lover a gift certificate to their favorite coffee shop, or buy a chocolate lover a gourmet piece of chocolate. It’s a simple gesture that can go a long way.
Return the favor. If someone has done something nice for you, a simple way to show your appreciation is to return the favor by giving your time.For instance, if someone has helped you during a time of need, tell them that you want to take them to lunch, dinner, or dessert for being such an instrumental person in your life.
This lets them know you appreciate them and it also gives you a chance to chat and grow closer.
Tell others. In the presence of the person or people you wish to thank, share your gratitude with others.Public forms of gratitude are important because it shows just how much you appreciate and care for others. This will also help you let go of any insecurities, jealousy, or anger because you are putting others first.

Building Self-Confidence through Positive Self-Talk

Whether you’re at work or just facing a bad day at home, there are many things you can do to make sure you’re back in the saddle and feeling more confident about life.

One of the best ways to regain your self-confidence is to give yourself a little pep talk.

The idea of positive self-talk, or positive thinking, is something many coaches and counselors suggest to their clients and nearly everyone can benefit from it.

Have you ever been in a situation where you think a little bit of positive reinforcement could make things a lot easier? Don’t wait for someone else to lift your spirits; take a moment and realize you can easily do it yourself!

Be Proactive and Gain Confidence

Having negative thoughts, even about a single project at work, can often impact your entire outlook on life.

You may begin to believe that you’re in a trap of bad luck or that things will never get better, but in reality, the only way for things to get better is to make positive changes and that takes both action and self-confidence.

When faced with a difficult situation that leaves negative feelings, step away for a few minutes and take some deep breaths.Think about a resolution to the problem, come up with a smart action plan, then return to propose your plan.
Removing yourself from the situation will help minimize those negative feelings while allowing you to gain some perspective.

What Makes You Special?

Another way to lift your spirits and give yourself a confidence boost is to remind yourself of your accomplishments, both at home and at work.

Did a client praise your work? Have you been promoted? Do co-workers come to you for advice? Do friends marvel at your decorating flair?Each person is so much more complex than what’s visible on the outside. Allow yourself to delve deeper into your soul and treasure what makes you unique.

Rediscover your personal strengths or hobbies that make you proud and happy.

Do you love to cook? Have you traveled extensively? Do you play an instrument? Do you play competition sports?These are all accomplishments you should be proud of because you took the time to develop these different facets of your life.

Think about the journey you took to reach those accomplishments. If something was too easy, you may place less importance on the final outcome, but when you are able to face and overcome serious challenges, it makes you a stronger and more determined person.

How Do I Use Positive Self-Talk?

The term positive self-talk might scare some people away, thinking it involves talking to yourself out loud.

Although you may choose to say positive affirmations out loud, it’s enough to just think positively about your accomplishments and what makes you special.

If you’re having trouble thinking about your strengths, sit down in a quiet spot and make a list of everything that makes you unique. Taking some extra time to write these things down will help reinforce them in your mind.

Once the list is written, post it in a place where you’ll see it everyday. Starting your day positively will make the small nuisances disappear.

If necessary, make copies of these lists so you can take one with you. Anytime you feel down or upset, take out your list and read it. You are a fabulous person and this list proves it!

This list isn’t written in stone; it should be a continuously changing list, just as we continuously change ourselves. So be sure to constantly add to your list as you achieve more accomplishments!

Everyone Can Benefit From Positive Thinking

As you build your self-confidence with positive self-talk, you might feel silly at first but you’ll still benefit from the experience.

Whenever you feel overwhelmed, stop and give yourself a little pep talk. Reassure yourself that you’re strong, that you can get through anything, and that success is within your grasp.

Remembering that everyone goes through ups and downs in life will help you face the day more positively.

Thoughts and feelings are what make us human.

Everyone experiences negative emotions, but if these negative feelings seem to cling to you everyday, then finding ways to dissolve that negative energy can be empowering.
