Overcoming Procrastination: Five Simple Ways to Get Up and Go

Procrastination: it’s something a good number of us tend to do, no matter what the task.

We know that putting something off doesn’t help us and it only makes things worse by adding stress to our lives, but knowing this only makes us procrastinate more.

How can you stop this vicious cycle, use your time more effectively, and get your tasks done sooner?

Here are 5 simple ways to get up and go and stop putting off things that must be done for the sake of bittersweet procrastination:

1. Determine why you delay working on your task.

Is it a specific task that you’re putting off, or do you procrastinate everything on your plate?

What is it about this task that stops you from doing it?

Are you scared of failing?

Do you fear that you’ll fall short of what’s expected of you?

Are you just lazy?

Are you resentful of whoever put this obligation upon you?

By evaluating the task, you can better understand what’s holding you back so you can complete the task more efficiently.

2. Make a plan.

When you make a step-by-step plan, you are setting a specific schedule and timeline to complete the task.

Write this plan down on paper.

Writing this list will help you better organize your thoughts and determine the small steps you need to take to accomplish your goals.

Give yourself attainable tasks on a daily, weekly or hourly timetable, as it applies to your situation.

You are less likely to be overwhelmed when you’re faced with small, manageable steps.

3. Be Realistic.

Be realistic about what you can achieve in your plan.

Doing so makes each step clearly attainable and you’ll be less likely to put it off.

Knowing your limits will make your goals seem easier and less of a mountain to climb.

4. Just Begin.

It sounds simple enough, but few heed this simple tip.

Most procrastinators find themselves prone to delaying the start of the task because it seems too overwhelming.

Instead, they stress and worry during the final moments before it’s due.

No matter how large or insurmountable the task may seem, beginning with even a small action will build momentum.

Simply beginning also tends to put the task into perspective and makes it seem more possible than ever.

5. Take Breaks.

Taking scheduled breaks while working on your task refreshes your body and mind.

If you go for a 10-minute walk or work on a Sudoku puzzle, you’ll feel re-energize and you’ll be in a better frame of mind to forge on.

Breaks, while refreshing, should be taken in moderation; you certainly don’t want to use breaks as an excuse to lapse back into procrastination.

Strategies to Conquer Fear of the Unknown

Worrying about what the future holds is one of the most common fears.

Often times you’re anticipating the worst while, at the same time, realizing that a life in fear is not very pleasant at all.

Fortunately there are certain strategies you can use to conquer your fear of the unknown.

Try implementing some of these techniques to conquer your fears:

Think about the outcomes. When you’re approaching an unknown situation, it helps to make a list of all the possible outcomes.

Some of the results may be good and some not so good, but feeling like you have just a little foreknowledge about the future will help to ease your fears.

Clear the mind. Make an active effort to clear your mind.

One of the reasons you feel fear is that you’re worried that something bad is going to happen.

This could be because of a situation from your past that you’ve projected into the future.

You need to take these thoughts off the table and approach your fears with a clear head.

Take positive steps forward.

It sounds easy, but it may be difficult to put into practice. Strive to visualize everything turning out positively.

If you concentrate more on the positive aspect, you can actually turn your fear into excitement.

Study fear. Fear has a real purpose in appropriate situations.

The experience of fear makes your heart rate rise and you’re better able to escape threatening situations.

However, humans have built many unnecessary and non-life threatening fears.

Once you realize that these types of fears serve no purpose, you’ll be stronger for it.

Talk it through. You might be feeling alone with your fears. It helps to talk through your problems with someone close to you.

Perhaps it’ll help to discuss your fears with someone who has experienced a similar situation.

Just knowing you’re not alone can ease your fear, even if the person doesn’t have any especially helpful advice to give.

Start small. If you’re afraid of the unknown in a general sense, starting small will help reduce your fear.

Instead of tackling a seemingly huge insurmountable task, just try doing something small first.

Break out of your comfort zone for a little bit and try something new you’ve never tried before.

Give up control. The future can be frightening when we think we must control every aspect of it.

While there are certain actions you can take to maintain some kind of control, there are many things you have no control over.

When you accept that the future will be what it will be, regardless of how you feel, it may not seem quite as scary.

Present Thinking

When your thoughts get caught up in the future, whether it’s the near future or the distant future, it clouds your current situation.

If you’re especially fearful, take a step back and focus on what is going on in the present moment.

Your present thinking automatically allows you to take things one step at a time.

If you’re currently doing the laundry, for example, the only thing you should focus on is getting stains out or putting clothes in the dryer – or positive things you look forward to.

Brush other worries away and live in the here and now.

This isn’t to say you should never think about the future.

When you think about the future, do it with a clear head and positive thoughts and without letting the fears bury you.

Following these strategies can alleviate your fear of the unknown and bring you a life full of enthusiasm for the future instead of fear.

How You Can Slip Exercise into Your Everyday Routines

Many people say that they simply don’t have the time to exercise.

While this may be perfectly true in a fast paced world, there are certain things you can do to incorporate exercise into your daily life without allotting much time for it.

When it comes to exercise, it all starts with a good attitude and a little bit of action each day.

It’s a common misconception to believe that you need to engage in strict dieting or lengthy and vigorous exercise routines in order to stay in shape.

It simply isn’t true!

Try some of these tips in order to slip exercise into your daily routine:

1. Take the Stairs. No matter where you are, there are many times when you can opt to take the stairs instead of an elevator.

Whether you’re attending an important business meeting, or just going to the mall, take the stairs.

2. Go for a Walk. Walking is a great way to get extra exercise and most of the time it doesn’t feel like exercise at all.

If you were planning to meet with a friend, ask them if they’d like to go for a walk while you talk.

Alternatively, you can go for walk when you just need to sort some of your thoughts.

Besides, getting some extra blood to the brain will actually help you think clearer.

3. Play with Your Children. If you have children, it’s likely that you have at least a part of your day dedicated to their care.

Decide that you’re going to engage in active games like outdoor sports. You can even do this with pets too.

It’ll be a fun and relaxing source of exercise!

4. Jog in Place. Jogging in place might seem like a boring activity, but when you combine it with something else that you’re doing, it can be quite invigorating.

There are bound to be short bursts of time that you can use to relieve tension and get the blood pumping.

5. Ride Your Bike. If you’re traveling a short distance, it’s a good idea to take your bike, instead of the car or bus.

While it may add some time to your overall travel time, it’s a great way to stay in shape if you can spare a few extra minutes.

6. Active Dates. Whether you’d like to schedule a date with a partner, friend, or family member, you can definitely choose an activity with exercise.

Instead of going to a movie, go dancing. You could even try something like rock climbing or attending the batting cages.

Get creative and have a blast!

7. Lift Weights. You can multitask while lifting weights as well.

Lift while you’re brainstorming, watching TV, or talking on the phone.

You may also want to keep the weights at your desk as a reminder to use them.

8. Park Far Away. You don’t need the stress of fighting for the closest parking spot. Instead, travel a little further and walk!

There’s little stress involved with this decision and it’ll probably save you some time, too.

9. Try Outdoor Chores. If you don’t already participate in outdoor chores, you could be helping your house and yourself by engaging in them.

You might even be saving your family some money if you’ve previously hired the neighbor’s kids.

Mow your lawn, do some weeding, or take up gardening – it’s a simple way to stay fit!

10. Keep Moving

It doesn’t take long to realize that, with the proper attitude, you can still remain active while you’re busy with other things.

Sometimes you may end up taking a little extra time to do routine tasks, but your body will thank you for it.

Just take these simple, small actions each day and you’ll soon reap the rewards!

How to Make Your To-Do List More Effective

You already know that to-do lists help you get focused and organized throughout the day.

When you have your to-do list in hand, you’re freeing your mind from all the disorganized thoughts and, instead, getting them down on paper.

However, this technique can go awry if your to-do list isn’t organized as well as it should be.

You might lose your motivation and drive and, at the end of the day, you may notice that most of the things from your list are not crossed off.

Follow these tips to create an effective to-do list:

Clarify Priorities. It may help you to develop some sort of ranking system for your to-do list.

Certainly every item on the list can’t be equally important. You can even use a number system and rank them from 1 to 5.

Items ranked 1 might have a lower priority, while the 5s are tasks you should attend to first.

You should also clarify your priorities in the sense that you need to leave yourself detailed instructions.

Figure out the: who, what, where, when and why of items that may be complicated.

This way, when it comes time to tackle the task, you won’t skip over them simply because they seem too complex to complete.

Pare Down the List. You need to complete tasks or part of tasks one step at a time.

If you have 15 minutes to spare, find something on the list that you can complete in that time period.

It’s common to tell yourself that 15 minutes is not enough time to do something, but all those 15-minute chunks add up to something huge.

At the end of the day you’ll be surprised how much you’ve accomplished in small increments.

Include Flex Time. If your to-do list is too rigid, it simply won’t be effective. You absolutely need to include some flexibility and breathing room in your day.

Try not to jam pack your day with unreasonable goals, otherwise, you’ll be at risk of disappointment.

Add in Something Fun. Your to-do list is no doubt full of things you may not be looking forward.

That’s why integrating fun activities and tasks should also be a priority!

When you add in a fun item it doesn’t feel like work. It may even feel like a break.

When you return to the less desirable items, you’ll be more motivated to actually get them done.

Don’t List Too Much. It’s vital not to overwhelm yourself.

While some days might be action packed in order to reach certain deadlines, you need to avoid this level of stress on a regular basis.

If there’s too much on your plate, or you have to work too fast, you can’t possibly enjoy yourself and you’ll only end up frustrated and overwhelmed.

Keep It Organized. Your list needs to be organized in a way that makes you feel comfortable.

There are many options nowadays, especially with digital devices. However, the old-fashioned pen and paper method may be what works best for you.

You can also opt for using the internet or even your cell phone or mobile device to keep your list organized.

Expect the Unexpected – Creating a Plan B for Greater Financial Security

Now more than ever, it’s important to secure your financial future. If the chips are ever down, you’ll at least have a plan to turn to for help.

It’s true that you should put your whole heart in your main source of income.

When you work hard enough with a drive to succeed, nothing will keep you away from that success.

However, unexpected circumstances come into play every so often, so you may need to divert to Plan B temporarily.

Here are some ideas for building a rock-solid Plan B:

Develop Multiple Streams of Income. When your main stream of income is sufficient to sustain your family, you may be tempted to rely on that income alone.

However, it’s always a good idea to insulate and supplement that income.

You may think you don’t absolutely need the money, but you can always save for future unexpected expenses.

Look for other opportunities for side jobs in your field

Turn a hobby into a money maker

Consider wise investments to grow money faster

Add to Your Savings. You’ll need to realize that even small contributions will add up to something big before you know it.

Shop around for a high yield savings account. Tell yourself that you’ll add a fixed amount to the fund each month.

Have an automatic withdrawal every month even if you can only afford $10 or $25 at a time. Over the long run this really adds up!

Develop Your Skills. Always be on the look out for opportunities to improve your current skill set, or to develop completely new skills.

This will give you back up career opportunities. If you pigeon hole yourself into one set career, you’ll be scrambling if something unexpected happens.

While it’ll still be a bummer if Plan A falls through, it’ll feel so much better when you can launch into Plan B without panicking.

Make Contacts and Establish Good Relationships. You’ve probably heard the saying: “Don’t burn your bridges.”

You truly never know when you might want to walk a certain path, so don’t close any doors hastily.

Also, remain open and make contacts wherever you can.

You might just be hanging out at the gym after work, but you never know what kind of friendship you can drum up, and how that person may be able to help you out in the future.

Write Out Your Plans. It’s vital to maintain a certain amount of organization in your plans.

When establishing your life’s Plan A and Plan B, it’ll really help to write everything down. Have separate lists for your short term and long term financial goals.

Cross off goals as you meet them. This way you’ve got a written reminder of your progress.

If Plan B comes into play, you’ll have written instructions and you won’t have to worry.

Making Wise Choices

When it comes down to deciding what you should do with your money, remember to always invest in some sure bets.

You don’t want to gamble with your money expecting greater gains. Your best bet is to find a middle ground.

Decide on a certain amount of money that automatically goes into a savings account and can’t be touched.

When you have a nest egg for unexpected life events, it gives you time to execute your Plan B.

If you’re lucky enough to have extra cash coming in, you can then decide to be riskier with your financial decisions.

As long as you know you have enough money coming in, it may be worth your time and investment.

7 Tips to Grow Your Savings Account Without Depriving Yourself

Surely we all agree that having a savings account is important. What’s hard, however, is putting that concept into practice.

It’s difficult to add to a savings account when you find yourself living paycheck to paycheck like many people find themselves having to do these days.

The good news is that even the smallest of contributions can have big impacts on the future of your account.

There are certain things you can do to add to your account without it being a burden.

Try these tips to effortlessly boost your savings:

1. Small Automatic Deposits. Chances are you need all or most of your paycheck each period.

However, you can save a small portion of this amount by having it automatically deposited into your savings account.

Most banks will allow you to set up automatic transfers. Each time your paycheck is due in, schedule a transfer to savings.

Even if this amount is $5, it will add up over time.

2. Pay With Cash. When you pay for your essentials with cash, you’re really seeing the exact amounts of money you’re spending as the money changes hands.

Then drop the change from these transactions into a jar when you get home.

Before you know it, you’ll be depositing large amounts of change into your savings account with little effort!

3. Credit Card Round Up. Some credit cards, such as one by Bank of America, will actually round up each of your purchases for you to the nearest dollar amount.

The rounded amount will be automatically deposited into your savings account.

Getting one of these card accounts could make adding to your savings account easier on you.

4. Add Up Your Charges. One month, add up everything you spend. It doesn’t matter how you’ve made the purchases – cash, credit, debit, etc.

In analyzing these expenses you’ll likely find some recurring expenses that can go. Perhaps there’s something you could live without.

That small expense will pay you back in the future if you add it to your savings instead.

5. Avoid Impulse Buys. Everyone has fallen victim to an impulse buy at some point.

Make a pact with yourself that you’ll never make them again.

Instead, when you feel the need to get something, give yourself a 24-hour cooling off period.

If you still feel that you must have it after that time, go ahead and spend the money.

If you’ve thought it over and you don’t need it, perhaps that money is better spent going directly into your savings account.

6. Avoid Credit Card Use. If you have trouble paying off your credit cards in full each month, stop using your cards.

Switch over to cash and debit card use and slowly pay down the balance on your credit card.

As your balances are paid off, the money you used to pay in interest to the credit card companies can be better spent in your savings account.

7. Reduce Everyday Expenses. Do an evaluation of your required expenses such as internet, phone, and grocery bills. See if there are any ways to reduce these bills.

For instance, maybe you could easily switch to a lower cost phone plan or start clipping coupons at the grocery store.

If you could find an extra $50 in your budget this way, you can greatly improve the look of your savings account!

Limit the number of times you go out every week and start planning your menus when you cook at home. This will make a huge difference in your grocery bill.

2. Map Out Your Expenses

For a month, write down everything you buy.

Don’t worry about obsessively reviewing it every day, but take the time to make it accurate.

You’ll find that there are plenty of unnecessary purchases you can eliminate from your budget without thinking twice.

Tips To Increase Your Productivity At Home and At Work

Have you ever planned for a productive day, but when the day is over your to-do list seems no different than when you got started?

This doesn’t mean you’re lazy or incompetent; what it means is that you may want to work on your productivity.

Being productive is an important part of running a good household or office.

By simply by keeping a few tips in mind, you can watch your productivity go through the roof!

1. Get Organized

One way people lose productivity is through a cluttered and disorganized workspace.

If you have to hunt for your tools or paperwork whenever you start a task, you’re not going to get things done as fast as you’d like.

Take some time to organize your workspace and your storage space.You’ll find that the less time you spend having to hunt for things and the fewer distractions you have, the more productive you’re going to be.

Clean out that basement or get those storage boxes out of the corner of your office.Toss or donate the things you don’t need and find an organized place for everything that’s staying.
2. Identify Time Wasters

Some of our regular activities are actually time wasters.

For instance, do you ever catch yourself saying that you’re just going to play one more game of Solitaire, or catch just one more song on the radio?

While doing these things isn’t always bad, it can become problematic if you allow yourself to be constantly distracted.

Make a list and identify each time waster.

If you notice that one game of Solitaire easily turns into three or four, uninstall the game from your computer for a while.You might be surprised by how much time you gain.

Limit your time on the phone and set a defined time limit to run errands so you can focus on getting things done.3. Be Aware of Deadlines

You may get your projects done on time, but if you’re always cutting it close, stressing yourself out and losing sleep over your deadlines, you may need to analyze how you use your time.

If you have a deadline, clearly mark the deadline on your calendar or planner and do your best to beat it by a week at least.Taking care of things long before they’re due will free up a lot more time than you think, and it will prevent a blind rush at the very end.

Give you and your family a deadline for household projects.Make a list or mark your family calendar with big projects, like cleaning the garage or getting new mulch for the landscaping.
4. Take Breaks

It sounds counter intuitive, but taking more breaks can make you more productive.

It’s all about maximizing your time and if you’re not getting things done anyway, taking a break will refresh your mind.

Sometimes you need to take a break and completely separate yourself from work.

What Do Your Priorities Look Like?

You need to make an organized and frequently updated list of priorities.

When you prioritize outstanding tasks, you’ll suddenly find that all of the work on your plate really is manageable.
